BILLY CORGAN TALKS ABOUT RELAUNCHING THE NWA

By Kendall Jenkins on 2017-10-08 00:12:00

Frontman for famed rock band the Smashing Pumpkins, and all out-music icon from the 1990s, Billy Corgan has not just been a pro wrestling fan all his life. He has also been trying to get started as one of the business’ major players for some years now.

These days, after attempting to buy Impact Wrestling, it looks like he is finally at a point of readiness in terms of making his mark in this industry thanks to his recent acquisition of the National Wrestling Alliance, or NWA.

Corgan Brought on Board by TNA Wrestling

In 2015, Corgan was brought on board by TNA Wrestling in order to develop characters and have a hand in the creation of storylines, and this ultimately lead to him becoming the company’s president. As is the case, it seems, with most things that TNA is involved with, this venture ended badly, and Corgan in time sued the company in order to get the money that he had invested into it returned. Unlike the money generated by the Mayweather/McGregor fight and the associated hype, Corgan was left out in the cold financially.

Corgan’s NWA Ownership Took Effect on October 1

In May of 2017, Corgan signed a deal to buy the rights to the NWA, and his ownership went into effect on the 1st of October. Now that the musician is totally in charge, he has interesting plans, extending quite far into the future, in an attempt to return the NWA to its former glory. His 20-year plan intends to take NWA to the good old days of the 1980s!

Corgan said in a press report that his team had seen how Anthem has positioned Impact Wrestling, in terms of how the WWE was placed, and that this had resulted in him wanting to institute improvements with the NWA.

Corgan plans to work with Dave Lagana, an industry veteran, in order to achieve his goals. As far as exposure of his brand was concerned, Corgan stated that he would prefer to have 300 000 people watching the NWA free of charge, than 4 000 people watching it for a price. In much the same way that the online gambling NZ sites offer a range of bonuses to incentivise new players, Corgan seems to think that increasing awareness is more important than making money initially.

What Lies Ahead for Corgan and the NWA

As important as the NWA is to the wrestling industry historically, it isn’t a name that particularly resonates with fans outside of a few WWE Network documentaries. Interestingly, this may be a factor that works in Corgan’s favour, as he seems determined to take his time to cultivate a brand-new brand. As he does so, and is able to work out the kinks as he goes along, he will still be able to enjoy having a big name behind his efforts.

Referring to the time he spent with TNA, Corgan spoke of being very frustrated with internal, cultural, and fiscal obstacles, as well as a world of backstabbing and untruths that he had to deal with. This experience, he stated, has at least taught him about what not to do going forward.
