LES THATCHER REMEMBERS BOBBY HEENAN

By Les Thatcher on 2017-09-18 10:58:00

My Sunday evening ended with the sadness of the news of the passing of my longtime friend Bobby Heenan. Thousands of words will be written over the next few days about the amazing talent he brought to our industry, his wit, and how he enhanced each and every wrestler he managed over the years.

It will all be true, but if you haven't known Bobby, you can't possible understand the legacy he has left behind. I will leave that to the words more talented then myself.

My memory begins a year or so before Bobby's first appearance in a wrestling ring in 1965, remembering a young fan who carried the wrestlers' jackets from the ring back to the locker room of the Dick The Bruiser-Wilbur Snyder promotion based in Indianapolis, Indiana. I remember going to Calvin Pullins who was to work with Bobby in one of his earliest matches and asking him to tell Bobby he was just ribbing about stretching him that night as the rookie was a bundle of nerves because of it. I'm not sure how many of us are still around that remember those days.

Over the years when our paths crossed, we would both mention goofy little things from those days that would make us laugh. I last saw my friend and had a chance to give him a hug and tell him I loved him at the WrestleCon event in New Jersey a few years ago.

Bobby Heenan was a one of a kind multi-talented human being that will never be topped or duplicated in our lifetime. He should automatically inducted into every Hall of Fame and placed high on any top ten listing.  His name will be mentioned in any conversation involving greatness in pro wrestling and his passing is leaving a great void in the wrestling world.

But, to me, I will always remember with fondness the young man that worked at the Ford dealership and carried jackets who became my friend all those years ago.

Go with God my dear friend, and please take my love and respect with you.

You are missed.
