By Kendall Jenkins on 2017-06-27 07:57:00

With European, Asian and Pan-Am Championships over by mid-May, attentions will soon be turned to France where the Wrestling World Championships will be held from Monday August 21st until Friday, August 26th in the AccorHotels Arena in Paris.

Alain Bertholom, the FFL (French Wrestling Federation) president has remarked how this will place a tremendous spotlight on men and women’s’ wrestling in France. The country now has 3 months to fine-tune their management of the event. This year will mark the first time that France will host the combined men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle championships, and they have already unveiled their new mascot ‘Eiffy’ (an Eiffel Tower complete with wrestling jersey) which has proved popular with the fans!

For avid followers of the sport, this is the perfect opportunity to come up against online sports betting operators like Sportingbet; and win some cash whilst enjoying the action.

Monday 21st sees men’s Greco-Roman contenders from all over the globe challenge each other in 71kg, 75kg, 85kg, and 98kg categories.

Tuesday 22nd completes the Greco-Roman series with 59kg, 66kg, 80kg, and 130kg.

Wednesday 23rd August it’s the women’s turn, with Women’s Freestyle 55kg, 58kg, 63kg, and 75kg.

Thursday 24th with Women’s Freestyle 48kg, 53kg, 60kg, and 69kg.

Friday 25th brings us into the men’s arena with Men’s Freestyle 57kg, 61kg, 86kg, and 125kg carrying over to Friday 26th for 65kg, 70kg, 74kg and 97kg.

One of the US contenders for the Women’s Freestyle competition is Fraser University’s junior wrestler Mallory Velte, who won her weight class at the USA world team trials in Vegas this month, which qualifies her for the senior competition in Paris. Velte is a rising star in US women’s wrestling and is definitely one to watch, being two-time WCWA Champion and 2017 Lorne Davies Athlete of the Year. “I’m ready to win a World medal in Paris,” she said, “I imagined this”.

Fellow Fraser University alumnus, and two-time Junior World Champion, Victoria Anthony in addition to 2016 Olympic Champion, Helen Maroulis, also won spots on the U.S. Women’s World Team and will be joining Velte at the Paris arena in August.

In USA, the less popular style of Greco-Roman wrestling has give coach Matt Lindland a suitable challenge. “Obviously, we’ve got to get a lot better,” Lindland confesses. “I believe in the guys we have and we need to develop more athletes and keep building for the future. We want to have the best team in the world – that’s what we’re all working for”. Cheyney Haight, Robby Smith, Ellis Coleman, Ben Provisor, Ildar Havizov, Pat Smith, Mason Manville and G’Angelo Hancock will all be heading to the World Championships in August after winning their weight classes in the team trials held in Vegas this month.

The men’s US Freestyle World Team Trials are due to be held in Lincoln next month. Among those expected to compete, on June 9th and 10th, will be three-time World Champion and former Olympic champion, Jordan Burroughs and James Green, a 2015 world bronze medallist.  All eyes will be on each weight class to discover which eight athletes will be on their way to the World Championships.

So clear the calendar and get set to follow all the action; these Championships have the potential to one of the most exciting and greatest ever!
