ESPN 2 aired Drive to the XFL Draft, a 30 minute documentary look at the XFL this morning at 4:30 AM, built around owners Dani Garcia (touted as the first woman to ever own a sports league) and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who was positioned as someone who could have used the XFL to continue his football dreams, if the XFL had existed at the time, after the NFL dream was no longer an option. In the doc, Garcia noted that when Vince McMahon relaunched the league in 2020, she noted that she wished he had called her because she thought it was a really interesting idea. She referred to the league as an entertainment property rooted in football. She and Johnson both came off well with Johnson acknowledging that once they are partners bought it, he realized he didn't know a thing about running a league and would be diving in head-first, just as he did with his WWE career and with starting his film career a The Scorpion King. They reviewed the personal and professional history between the two and presented the 2020 season of the XFL as something that would have worked out differently had it not been for the COVID-19 pandemic. Vince McMahon was mentioned briefly but never with any great details, just in passing as someone who created and owned the previous incarnation of the leagie.
A new XFL series, Player 54, directed by Peter Berg will follow "the building of the XFL and follows the unique stories of players and coaches throughout the inaugural season. The XFL series will debut tomorrow at 5 PM on ESPN 2 with episodes also available to stream on ESPN+. The trailer for the series was released this morning:
ABC will be airing a XFL Season Preview this Saturday 2/18 at 2 PM Eastern.
This coming Saturday, for the third time, the XFL debuts with their kickoff weekend featuring the following four scheduled games:
Saturday 2/18 at 3 PM, airing on ABC, Vegas Vipers at Arlngton Renegades at Choctaw Stadium.
Saturday 2/18 at 8 PM, airing on ESPN and FX: Orlando Guardians vs. Houston Roughnecks at TDECU Stadium.
Sunday 2/19 at 3 PM, airing on ABC: The St. Louis Battlehawks vs. San Antonio Brahmas at The Alamodome.
Sunday 2/19 at 8 PM, airing on ESPN: The Seattle Sea Dragons vs. D.C. Defenders at Audi Field.
