WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN SATURDAY - THE WWE BACKLASH: FRANCE TIP SHEET

By Dave Scherer, Mike Johnson & Richard Trionfo on 2024-05-02 18:27:00

WWE will present Backlash: France this Saturday 5/4 on Peacock and the WWE Network from Lyon-Décines, France at the LDLC Arena.  Here is our take on what will happen on Saturday.

Jey Uso versus Damian Priest for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

Dave: First off, I am very excited to see how the French crowd stacks up to the other destination shows that WWE has done.  My guess is that they will be lit for the show.  Priest just won the Title at Mania, via cash in, so he needs to score a good amount of wins to show that he is a legitimate champion.  That starts tonight with Jey.  Will it be straight up? Probably not.  Priest has told his guys to stop interfering, which with a heel often means expect interference.  Plus, Solo is also at the building.  We shall see.

Mike: I expect this will be excellent.  It needs to be a coming out party for Priest to establish him further as a top star.  I expect he wins.

Richard:  Damian Priest says he doesn't need the help of the rest of THE Judgment Day (which might be the smartest thing when you look at how great they have done to help him), but I don't think Jey will be able to take the title from Priest.  Damian needs a strong performance to solidify what happened at Wrestlemania.  Jey needs a strong performance in this match more than to win the title on Saturday.  If Jey doesn't stay on the same page as Priest or he might go from Main Event Jey Uso to . . . Jey Uso on Main Event.

AJ Styles versus Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship.

Dave: As best as I can remember, this is a first time match up.  I expect a good, hard fought match where Cody comes out on top.  He just finished the story less than a month ago. There's no way I see a title change here.

Mike:  This should be GREAT bell to bell, but there's no way there is a title change here.

Richard:  I like how they have built this match.  As I am writing this, they have not aired Smackdown so I don't know how the 'face to face' will end up but I hope they don't follow the 'they are going to fight' trope.  This should be a good match and while AJ has had a good run in 2024, he did lose to LA Knight at Wrestlemania and he hasn't done enough to justify the title.  AJ will come very close but Cody isn't going to lose the title less than a month after winning.

Tiffany Stratton versus Naomi versus Bayley for the WWE Women's Championship.

Dave: Would WWE be so bold as to put the belt on Tiffy here?  I could see it, but I will go with what I always go with, I hate to see the champ lose the belt in a three way but at least if they do it here, and Naomi takes the pin from Tiffy, they can definitely do some great storytelling coming out of it.  I could definitely see them pulling the trigger here.

Mike: Too early to go with Tiffany - yet - in my mind.  I expect Bayley will retain.

Richard:  My biggest fear with this match was that Nia was going to be added to make it a four way match, but they can do that at a future PPV.   Tiffany's time will come, but let Jade have the big moment on this show and let Tiffany get better in the ring and make you want to see her finally win the title.  Bayley should retain the title and I think she pins Naomi after Naomi is about to beat Tiffany for the title.  Will there be any animosity between Naomi and Bayley

Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill versus Kabuki Warriors for the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship.

Dave: If it's me, new champs are crowned.  Jade's debut has been huge.  They might as well keep it rolling by putting some gold around her waist.  Having her do it in a team with Bianca is a great way to progress her slowly.  There's no rush here.

Mike:  I expect a title change here.  Putting Cargill with Bianca will be a good way to help her get experience as the company continues to build her as an attraction.

Richard:  The run of Damage CTRL was nice while it lasted and at least they got to have some success.  You have a WWE 'Dream Team' of Jade and Bianca.  They aren't going to lose this match.  I expect to see Dakota do whatever she can to keep the titles with Asuka and Kairi.  In the end, it will be KOD followed by Jaded and we see what Jade can do with a title in the WWE.

Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga versus Randy Orton and Kevin Owens.

Dave: I see The Bloodline going over here.  How?  Well, this just may be where we see the debut of Jacob Fatu.  Oh yeah.

Mike:   There is no way Bloodline is losing here.  They are still establishing Tama Tonga and this chapter of the Bloodline.

Richard:  It has been 6 months since Solo Sikoa won a match so does that mean it is time?  Why ruin a good thing and let the spokesman for the Top Faction in WWE do something successful.  I would not be surprised to see Orton and Owens lose to Solo and Tama to keep this feud going until Roman decides to come back.  I still think Orton and Owens win this match, but I could see it by disqualification due to the possible debut of Jacob Fatu.
