WILL RODERICK STRONG ADD TO THE LIST OF SHOCK TITLE CHANGES AT AEW DOUBLE OR NOTHING?

By Kendall Jenkins on 2024-05-08 09:46:00

Although not yet as iconic as WrestleMania or the Royal Rumble, Double or Nothing is the most eagerly-anticipated PPV in AEW – it would be hard to argue otherwise.

An array of memorable title changes has also served to build the hype around Double or Nothing, so will the crowd at the MGM Grand get to witness something similar in 2024?

Roderick Strong is amongst those who will be hoping so – he will tackle Will Ospreay for the AEW International Championship on the card.

Where would an upset victory for the champion rank in the most unlikely victories at Double or Nothing?

Jade Cargill Loses to Kris Statlander (2023)

It’s unusual for a champion to head into a match as the underdog – those who bet on sports can get odds of 7/2 on strap-holder Strong to overcome Ospreay (1/6).

The Paddy Power News site will keep readers updated with all the goings on at Double or Nothing 2024, as they did a year earlier at the chaotic 2023 edition headlined by the ‘Anarchy in the Arena’ match between the Blackpool Combat Club and The Elite.

Jade Cargill was a strong favourite heading into her TBS Championship clash with Taya Valkyrie, during which she duly extended her unbeaten run as the champion to 60 wins. And then… well, all hell broke loose.

Kris Statlander made her way down to the ring, accompanied by a huge pop from the crowd given her year-long absence from injury, before promptly ending Cargill’s reign inside a minute.

Jungle Boy Wins the Casino Battle Royale (2021)

With the winner receiving a future AEW Championship title shot, the Casino Battle Royale was an excellent way for show creatives to further the career of one of their up-and-coming stars.

Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, they chose Jungle Boy as their victor. He made three eliminations – including the final, crucial dismissal of Christian Cage – to win the 20-man contest, which most would have predicted would have been won by the likes of Cage, Matt Hardy, or surprise entrant Lio Rush.

But this is Double or Nothing, so it pays to expect the unexpected.

Chris Jericho Beats Kenny Omega (2019)

There’s something about the Memorial Day scheduling, and the fact that this was the brand’s inaugural PPV event back in 2019, that makes Double or Nothing so special.

The first-ever PPV produced by AEW was a classic, with future stars Adam Page and MJF the last men standing in the Casino Battle Royale, the Young Bucks defeating the Lucha Brothers in a breathless high-flying affair and Cody and Dustin Rhodes locking horns in one of the most impassioned bouts in the brand’s history.

But the main event was reserved for Chris Jericho and Kenny Omega, with the latter expected to get the push over the veteran.

However, AEW writers had other ideas – Y2J winning cleanly over the athlete many expected the brand to use as its figurehead for years to come (which they have, ironically).

And it just goes to show that shock results are not in short supply at Double or Nothing…
