WCW CELEBRITY WRESTLER ELECTED TO NFL HALL OF FAME

By Mike Johnson on 2016-02-06 23:29:00

Kevin Greene, who parlayed his fame from the NFL into a short run in World Championship Wrestling as a pro wrestler, was elected today to the National Football League's Hall of Fame.

Greene only wrestled five times for WCW but received considerable media exposure for the appearances at the time.  He was most notably involved in a great angle at the Great American Bash where he and fellow NFL alumnus Steve McMichael teamed against Ric Flair and Arn Anderson in 1996 which ended up being a tremendous angle where McMichael, after nearly a year on TV as a babyface announcer, turned on his partner to become a member of the Four Horsemen.

Greene would team with Flair and Roddy Piper against the NWO at the 1997 Slamboree and then face and defeat McMichael in a singles match to get his "revenge" a year later at the Great American Bash 1997.  He would have a short run in 1998 as well, defeating the Giant (WWE's Big Show) via DQ on a Nitro broadcast to set up a rematch at the 1998 Bash at the Beach, which saw Greene lose via pinfall.

Eventually, the NFL would step in and restrict Greene from appearing as a professional wrestler, ending his time with WCW.

Over the course of his football career, he played with the Carolina Panthers, The San Francisco 49ers, The Los Angeles Rams and The Pittsburgh Steelers.  He Coached for the Green Bay Packers following the end of his run as a player for the NFL.

The Hall of Fame ceremonies will be in August.
