CORNETTE VS. LUCHA UNDERGROUND, BODYSLAM THE MOVIE, DINK THE CLOWN & MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2016-02-06 10:00:00
Thoughts on Jim Cornette attacking Lucha Underground?

Jim is entirely entitled to his opinion and why anyone would be shocked that a 54 year old man from Louisville, Kentucky who's been lovingly obsessed with pro wrestling since he was a child and especially loves Southern Wrestling would absolutely hate a Lucha Libre science fiction series where a wrestler turns into a dragon is beyond me! Jim is not one to bite his tongue and in many ways, that's his deal. He rips things apart and gets people talking. I have no doubt he doesn't like the product, but you know what, that's his right! He's not required to like everything just because there's a wrestling ring in the center of the screen. Lucha is produced in a way that is directly opposite to how Cornette feels wrestling should be produced. He's entitled to feel that way as well. I don't see what the problem is with a man expressing his opinion, on his own show. It's not like he's picketing outside the Temple in a 2016 scene of "Stop the Sheik" from "I Like To Hurt People." It's also not like people who watch LU are now going to stop because Jim said how he feels. I think it's a whole big huff over nothing.

Does Judge Jeff Jones from ECW now work for Ring of Honor? I could have sworn I saw him in Duluth, GA tonight.

Yes, it's the same person.

I was watching "Bodyslam the Movie" and was wondering why Roddy Piper was involved but it wasn't an official WWF production? Was this film released in theatres?

The film was made while Piper was in the WWF but at the time, the WWF contracts didn't restrict their talents from doing outside acting....and Piper was pretty much someone who was going to do whatever he wanted anyway. The film went straight to home video because of an issue between the Director Hal Needham and the writers/producers that allegedly led to a fight between one of the writers and star Dirk Benedict. When the situation was legally settled, the film missed it's window theatrically.

Who was and whatever happened to Dink?

Dink was portrayed by Tiger Jackson, who will be reuniting with Ray Apollo (who was Doink during the time frame the Dink character was used) at a wrestling convention 3/5 in Queens NY. He's 59 today and I believe lives in Canada.

I'm going to start reading books about pro wrestling. Where should I start?

I'd start with the one that I think started the craze and was well written to boot - Mick Foley's first autobiography.
