WHY THE BISCHOFF-HOGAN ERA DIDN'T WORK FOR TNA, WHY WWE CANNOT RECREATE THE ATTITUDE ERA AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2015-07-16 10:00:00
i'm wondering why the Bischoff/Hogan regime failed to turn around TNA? When Bischoff took over WCW, he was pretty innovative initially and I assumed Dixie handed to creative keys over to Bischoff/Hogan to bring the same spark the product needed. Was it Russo behind the scenes in a political tug of war, Bischoff/Hogan being lazy and collecting a check or a combo of both?

I think there were a number of factors. One, they didn't bring any fresh ideas to the table, although production did improve. Two, The majority of the talent they brought in were seen as Hogan cronies (Bubba the Love Sponge, Nasty Boys) or talents who had already peaked elsewhere (Sean Morley) and none of it clicked with the audience. Only RVD really made a splash. Even Jeff Hardy's momentum was stunted early on. Third, they paid no mind to anything that had previously occurred in TNA and they made everyone involved look like morons on TV. See AJ Styles being portrayed as the Ric Flair knockoff. Fourth, the politics involved in the Hogan/Russo/Bischoff past heat didn't help. Fifth, I don't think for a second TNA was willing to put the money into the regime that was needed. Sixth, all involved wanted to go back in time to the Monday Night Wars. Seventh, Hogan was in bad physical shape and things were buily around him. On paper, I thought it was a great idea on night one but really, we all learned times had changed and we couldn't rekindle that flame. TNA needed something new and fresh and when Plan A didn't work, I don't think a truly viable Plan B was ever concocted.

Rollins has posted several pics on instagram of being in cross fit gyms with cesaro. Do you think anything will come of this? Most wwe stars try to stick to kayfabe it seems on social media as much as possible

Probably not. I don't think WWE really expects their stars to not be seen together. They were both heels at the time the photos were taken place, so I don't see it as an issue in the least.

WWE really LOVES to promote the Monday Night Wars and Attitude era. They keep releasing Network specials and DVDs about it. My question is how can they keep praising that time period and then do everything in their power to do the complete opposite of it now. I am not talking about the TV being PG because a rating shouldn't matter when it comes to telling a good story. I mean having 25 writers when 3 or 4 used to do. Devaluing their championships when back in the day even the European championship meant something. Having filler matches on PPV when it used to be every match had a story behind it. Scripting promos vs letting guys be themselves etc. etc. etc. Why can't Vince and co. just look at the ratings of both time periods and say "hmm...something isn't right"?

You bring up a lot of valid points but my feeling is that at the end of the day, Vince McMahon makes the calls and he's at a point in his life where he's preparing others to run the company should something happen to him. We also have to remember that for a good part of that era, WWF wasn't a public company, so there are other aspects in place now. Plus, the technology is so different that there's likely no way for WWE to hit the old numbers, so they are trying to make up for them in social media, DVR, etc.

I keep hearing people claim that Brock is a babyface now. Can you explain how what he and Paul are doing now is in anyway different than what they were doing before Wrestlemania? Heyman's delivery hasn't changed, Brock's actions haven't changed, they are the exact same people they were before just people are cheering for them now.

They are beating up on the villains now and deep down, most fans always want to cheer for Brock anyway, because he's so good.

Do you think it would serve WWE better to do away with the tired Face/Heel formula and just have guys go out, challenge for titles, get into fights etc. and let the fans decide if they want to cheer someone or not.

I think they have to a degree but the reality is wrestling works when it's good vs. evil. It's always been a morality play.
