THE HEADBANGERS, THE TNA-DESTINATION AMERICA STORY, WORST INJURIES SEEN IN PERSON AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2015-05-24 10:00:00

Where are the Headbangers today? Do they get along? Do they work the indies? We never see them on any of the shows where WWE brings back old talents.

The Headbangers each live in Florida and occasionally pop up on the Florida indy scene. They appeared at Wrestlecon in California over Wrestlemania weekend. They are still close friends. I'd love to see WWE use them as a veteran team in the company. They can both still go.

What was the worst/scariest injury you've seen live?

The worst injury I've personally seen was easily an ECW student named Kareem who was making his debut and slipped off the top rope and broke his leg during an angle that was edited to remove 99% of his appearance in 1996 or 1997. The crack scared the hell out of me, it was so loud. I felt awful for the guy as he was laying in the ring as the angle was ongoing, especially when Sandman caned him as he was down on the mat.

Another that I recall being really scared by was seeing Chris Daniels' rib literally dislocate and pop back into place during a match against Doug Williams in ROH in 2002. I nearly lost my lunch seeing that 15 feet in front of me. Thankfully, Daniels was OK.

I guess I would also consider a lot of the Death Match wrestling injuries I've seen, but those are a totally different animal.

What is your take on the Dave Meltzer-TNA deal?

I don't believe for one second that Dave Meltzer knowingly wrote something false. I believe that when he wrote the story, he believed he had the proper sourcing to back himself up.

In my opinion, if the story wasn't correct, it should have been Destination America, NOT TNA, to say anything. Fans expect wrestling promotions to lie to them and TNA, honestly, doesn't have the best track record in many fans' eyes. TNA commenting made it worse.   DA would have killed the story dead with one press release.  They, to date, have not and that's very telling.

As far as the story, I don't know what his sourcing was and I believe that when Meltzer posted his story, he believed at that moment that was the truth. It's also important to note that if things have changed, that doesn't make his story false either. It just means that things evolved, just as things changed between Steve Austin and WWE from the time I wrote about their issues in March to now.  Stories are all always in motion, in front of and behind the camera.  When a story is ongoing, it doesn't mean the reporting at a certain point was incorrect. I think a LOT of fans forget that in their rush to support/attack others or use what happens later to prove the initial reports were incorrect when that isn't the case at all.

Obviously, I want to see TNA as healthy as possible because a lot of good people make their living working there.  We will see how the story resolves itself.

Where is Jinder Mahal and Michael Tarver?

Tarver lives in Florida and works that indy scene all the time. [Updated] Mahal lives in Western Canada. He's popped up in Puerto Rico and has been appearing for Western Canada indies but for the most part, appears to be moving away from pro wrestling.

Where's Johnny Jeter?

The former Spirit Squad member lives in California and is about to get married.  He's pretty much removed himself from the pro wrestling world, at least as a performer.  It's a shame as he was always one of the better OVW talents during his time there and I always thought he was going to get a run after the Spirit Squad ran it's course, but, as they say, it wasn't to be.
