4/17 NJPW ROAD TO DONTAKU IN TOKYO, JAPAN REPORT

By Matthew Macklin on 2015-04-17 09:01:30
NJPW kicked off the Road to Wrestling Dontaku tour this morning from Korakuen Hall in Tokyo.

Tiger Mask IV defeated Sho Tanaka. Good back and forth match, with Tanaka looking as good as he always does. Tiger won after a back drop driver and a Tiger Driver.

Beretta & Rocky Romero (RPG Vice) defeated Yohei Komatsu & Mascara Dorada. Komatsu was incredible here as the fiery underdog babyface, and as usual, even though we know he's getting pinned, he always manages to make you believe for a second that he might win. Dorada was his usual mesmerising self. RPG Vice were the heels here, and wrestled differently than they did against The Bucks at Invasion Attack. RPG won with the Spike Sunset Driver.

Yuji Nagata & Ryusuke Taguchi defeated Captain New Japan & Manabu Nakanishi. I don't think I need to go into detail on who got pinned here. It was the guy in the ridiculous looking blue outfit. Taguchi attacked everyone with his arse and Nagata got the pin with the Back Drop Hold. It was nothing memorable.

Satoshi Kojima, Hiroyoshi Tenzan & KUSHIDA defeated Cody Hall, Yujiro Takahashi & Kenny Omega (Bullet Club). This was great, and much better than you'd expect. Omega & KUSHIDA went at it, with Omega mocking KUSHIDA's tag partner, Alex Shelley ahead of their match in a few weeks. There was one scary moment when Hall almost killed KUSHIDA when he couldn't decide between doing a back drop and a flapjack. Luckily KUSHIDA tucked his head and landed on his back. Other than that this was the best Hall had looked so far and continues to show improvement. There were some great exchanges towards the end with TenKoji double teaming Takahashi & Hall. Kojima pinned Hall with the Lariat in a really fun match.

Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows defeated Tomoaki Honma & Tetsuya Naito. This was another great match. Naito & Honma worked great together chopping down the larger Gallows. Honma missed several Kokeshi's, until he eventually scored one on Anderson towards the end. Naito had his mouth split opened just before the finish. The finish was fantastic, as Anderson caught Honma with a Gun Stun as he came off the top with a Kokeshi and he and Gallows hit the Magic Killer for the pin. A really cool finish from Anderson, that would put Randy Orton to shame.

Kazuchika Okada & Gedo defeated Tama Tonga & Bad Luck Fale. The story here was that The Rainmaker is back! It was a good match, but it was all about Okada getting a decisive win and looking confident. A more confident Okada took it to Fale easier than he had in previous matches. Okada pinned Tonga with The Rainmaker.

Kota Ibushi, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto, Togi Makabe & Katsuyori Shibata defeated YOSHI-HASHI, Tomohiro Ishii, Shinsuke Nakamura, Toru Yano & Kazushi Sakuraba. This was a hell of a main event, with all of the major feuds in NJPW coming together. Yano & Tanahashi played a game of chess with each other and did their best to out cheat one another. Tanahashi got one over on Yano in the end with a low blow, realising the only way to beat Yano is by beating him at his own game. NJPW have done an amazing job of making you want to see Tanahashi get his hands on Yano. Ishii & Makabe went at watch other with lariats, with neither blinking. Goto & Nakamura gave a glimpse of what's to come with them and as usual Sakuraba did very little, but looked good when he was in with Shibata. HASHI looked great in the closing minutes when he was in with Ibushi. But Ibushi got the pin on HASHI with a Phoenix Splash. A really good main event, well worth watching as a preview of the next couple of major NJPW shows.

This was the usual fun show you get from Korakuen Hall, and is well worth a watch. It is available on demand at NJPWWorld.com
