According to an article on MedioTiempo.com, the cause of death for Hijo del Perro Aguayo was cervical spinal damage.
One of the things we've heard a lot of questions about is why it took almost two minutes for anyone to start treating him. According to the MedioTiempo article, the doctor in charge of presiding over the show was actually preoccupied with treating two other wrestlers who had been injured on the show, which led to the delay as he wasn't at ringside for the main event and had to be notified something was wrong.
As far as why Aguayo was carried out on a piece of plywood, the article noted it was done as a way to get him backstage as quickly as possible and he was transferred to a stretcher for the ambulance once he was taken to the back.
Once Aguayo was rushed to Tijuana's Hospital del Prado, where doctors attempted for an hour to resuscitate him before finally marking his time of death.
