LUCHA UNDERGROUND EPISODE 4 TV REPORT: LOTS OF AWESOME WRESTLING, KING CUELO DEBUTS, FENIX VS. PENTAGON JR., DRAGO, JOHNNY MUNDO, IVELISSE AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2014-11-20 11:36:47

Episode 4 of Lucha Underground opened with a look back on owner Dario Cueto signing Johnny Mundo to make an example of him and what’s going down with Mundo over the last several weeks in the promotion.

We went to the announcers as they welcomed everyone and discussed the change in attitude for Chavo Guerrero.

Sexy Star vs. Ivelisse

Star cut a promo in Spanish calling Guerrero a coward and promising that the next time he sees her, he had better have a steel chair because that s the only way he can beat her. She promised to get revenge for what he did to her and Blue Demon Jr. She warned him to pay attention to what she does in the ring because she will end the Guerrero dynasty when she gets to him. They aired subtitles.

Ivellise came out cutting a promo mocking Star for messing with someone tougher than she is. Ivelisse said Star is not the baddest Luchadora here. She said that Star hides her ugly face with her ugly mask because deep down, Star and everyone else knows that Ivelisse is the baddest b**ch in the building Ivelisse was damn awesome on the mic. Yet another missed opportunity for WWE.

Star attacked her and beat her down on the mat. Ivelisse was great here as the heel selling for her and making Star look good. Star missed a charge in the corner and was hit with a drop toehold into the buckles. Ivelisse snapped her across the ring by her hair. Ivelisse used her boot to choke her in the corner. Velez controlled her on the mat but Star began fighting back. Ivelisse snapped her back to the mat by her hair.

Star finally made a comeback and they battled back and forth with stiff shots and strikes. Some really nice intensity in this bout. Star drilled Ivelisse with several elbows and clotheslines as she made a comeback. Star nailed a series of suplexes for a two count. Ivelisse nailed a stiff slap and locked in a forward guillotine choke before drilling her into the mat for a close two count.

Ivelisse began beating Star’s head into the mat. The referee admonished her and she argued. That allowed Star to grab her and lock her into a pinning combination for the pin.

Your winner, Sexy Star!

Real good match. Ivelisse is a hell of a talent and Star looked good as well.

After commercial, we go somewhere backstage where Drago is preparing for a match. Dario Cueto showed up and said that after his loss, Cueto is unsatisfied. He told Drago he needs to know what he is made of, so tonight he will look into the face of savagery. Drago flicked his tongue at Cueto and walked off.

Pentagon Jr. vs. Fenix

Pentagon was in the ring and cut a promo in Spanish. He said that in Mexico, no one respects him – the fans, the bosses or the other Pentagons. He thanked the fans for finally giving him the respect he deserves. He said he was going to take care of some unfinished business with Fenix tonight and he will do the same to anyone else who faces him in the ring. Again, subtitles, which are a welcome addition to a gringo like me.

After commercial, they rang the bell. They locked up and traded kicks. Pentagon nailed several but was caught with several pinfall attempts. They went into a series of faced paced sequences. Pentagon was sent to the floor and Fenix hit a beautiful tope con hilo to the outside.

Back in the ring, Fenix nailed a springboard legdrop for a two count. Fenix drilled several strikes and hit a multiple springboard missile dropkick, which looked awesome. Vampiro called it “Suicidal” in a nod to Sabu. Fenix continued to work over Pentagon with a springboard Lucha armdrag that sent Pentagon to the floor. Fenix then hit an awesome corkscrew tope to the floor. This is fun stuff.

Fenix brought Pentagon back into the ring for a two count. Pentagon changed the momentum of the match by going up and over in the corner and nailing a back stabber. Fenix came back with a Ace Cutter for a two count. Pentagon caught him with a twisting sit down Michinoku Driver for another near fall. Great stuff.

Pentagon put Fenix down with a big chop in the corner and sent him into the opposite corner. Pentagon was sent up and over onto the apron and then dropkicked off the top, sending him to the floor. Fenix worked him over on the floor before tossing him back in the ring for another near fall.

Pentagon and Fenix continued to battle back and forth. Pentagon nailed a face forward driver as Fenix went for body scissors. He brought Fenix over to the corner but took too long and was nailed with a leaping kick. Fenix went to the top and nailed a Spanish Fly off the top for the pin.

Your winner, Fenix!

Really, really fun match in the vein of the old WCW Cruiserweight bouts on Monday Nitro during it’s heyday. Athletic, fresh and simple to follow. Lots of great spots and lots of really fun wrestling.

They went to a video feature on a new character King Cuerno, who is a predator villain. It was pretty basic showing him working out in the ring and showcasing his strength. Pretty sure it’s Hijo del Fantasma portraying him. The idea is that he’s a hunter. He wears a deer’s head to the ring.

Drago vs. King Cuerno

Matt Striker said Drago looked like something out of Gwar, which has to be the first time the “Scumdogs of the Universe” were referenced on a professional wrestling broadcast.

Drago was showcased early only to be cut off with a stiff clothesline by Cuerno. He drilled Drago with a gorgeous dropkick and worked him over in the corner. He whipped Drago into the corner but was kicked off. Drago came off the ropes with a forward head scissors. He went for a head scissors takedown but was caught and slammed to the mat. Cuerno raked his wrists across Drago’s face.

Drago made a comeback leaping off the referee’s back to nail a rana that sent Cuerno to the floor. Drago hit an awesome dive to the outside. Cuerno sent him to the floor and hit a gorgeous tope suicida. This is great stuff. They returned to the ring for some super-fast exchanges with Drago finally scoring the win out of nowhere.

Your winner, Drago!

Just a great, fun Lucha match.

Backstage somewhere, Prince Puma is training as Konnan enters. Konnan tells him that Big Ryck is facing Johnny Mundo. He wanted to remind Puma that this is not his fight. He said that even if the entire locker room hits the ring, he needs to stay out of this. Puma didn’t acknowledge that he agreed. Konnan said that perhaps he needs to process that while he works out so he left Puma alone. Puma’s face showed he was conflicted.

After a commercial break, we returned with Big Ryck in the ring waiting for Johnny Mundo to come to the ring. They faced off as the bell rang and began slugging it out. Mundo went for several kicks to the legs. He grabbed a side headlock but Ryck wiped him out with a clothesline.

Mundo used his speed to evade Ryck but was trapped with a splash in the corner. Ryck went for a Beel Toss but Mundo landed on his feet and drilled Ryck with a series of punches in the corner, eventually taking him down to one knee. Ryck cut off Mundo and drilled him with several knees to the face.

Ryck nailed a big slam on Mundo for a two count and locked on a nervehold. Mundo drilled several kicks to the face from underneath to break the hold and nailed a dropsault to sent Ryck into the corner. Mundo nailed Moonlight Drive for a two count.

Ryck went for an Uranage but Mundo escaped and nailed a springboard kick off the ropes. We went backstage to Puma toweling off after his workout where Cisco and Castro Cortes attacked him and laid him out in the back. Back in the ring, Mundo was going for a move off the top when Castro and Cisco hit the ring and attacked him.

Your winner, Johnny Mundo by DQ!

The trio worked over Mundo. They pulled a table out from under the ring. Ryck nailed his Uranage through the table. Johnny Mundo was left buried under the remnants as they went to the credits.

Thoughts: Another really strong episode. The wrestling in the first three bouts was just awesome and something totally different from what you see presented elsewhere on national TV. Ivelisse is just phenomenal as a heel and it’s ridiculous to think that WWE had her and let her go. Sexy Star plays a great hero but Ivelisse was the star of the bout. Drago vs. King Cueno and Fenix vs. Pentagon had the sort of fresh feel that you don’t see a lot in pro wrestling these days. The way the show is shot really accentuates the high flying dives and you feel like you are watching something very cool and underground. In a lot of ways, you can see some original ECW influence in the way the characters are presented in the ring as these young cutting edge superstars. The Cueno character would have bombed bad had it not been his work being able to back it up in the ring. Mundo vs. Ryck felt more like a traditional WWE style bout but it was also more storyline driven then being put out there to blow people away athletically. Mundo feels more like a top star here than he ever did in WWE and Ryk shows charisma and ring presence that WWE ever showcased. Just a fun hour of pro wrestling. Lucha Underground hit it out of the park this week.
