BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING FROM WWE, TNA, AND ROH

By Richard Trionfo on 2014-10-21 07:10:06
Not too long ago in a wrestling galaxy looking a lot like this one, it was common to see more than 200 minutes of wrestling per week from the seven weekly shows from World Wrestling Entertainment, Impact Wrestling, and Ring of Honor. Due to weeks without Ring of Honor or weeks without a desire by some of the creative teams to give us any wrestling, this lofty goal was missed on a regular basis.

For the third time in 2014, and the first time since the week of May 5th, we saw a crooked number at the start of the weekly total. The other two times in 2014 that we saw more than 200 minutes of wrestling, Raw had 65 and 67 minutes of wrestling. This week, Raw won the week with 66 minutes of wrestling. Thanks to four matches longer than 10 minutes, Raw broke into the 60 minute club for the first time since that magical week in May. Raw also doubled its total from the previous week. It was only two weeks ago that we saw Raw’s total drop by 50 percent from the previous week.

Impact continues to show a propensity for wrestling with another second place finish even with a ten minute drop from last week. Ring of Honor stayed in third place for the second consecutive week with 26 minutes of wrestling. Smackdown finished in fourth place this week with 25 minutes of wrestling. NXT dropped to fifth place with 20 minutes of wrestling. NXT stayed consistent in sixth place with another week of 19 minutes of wrestling. Superstars also maintained its ranking and amount of wrestling from last week with 12 minutes.

By the time Raw ended, we had equaled the total amount of ten minute matches from each of the previous three weeks. Only Superstars and Smackdown failed to have a ten minute match this week. The eight ten minute matches is the most in a week since we had 8 in the last full week of 2013.

On the other side of the ledger, NXT was the only show to give us a one minute match this week and they didn’t want us to miss out because they gave us three in the six matches on the show. In the five weeks since Takeover: Fatal Four Way, we have had a one minute match. This is one of the results when you have wrestlers they are trying to establish as monsters.

In a week when Raw had an average match length greater than eight minutes, it would only be second best because of Ring of Honor’s near nine minute average match length. The same fate befell Raw for its average amount of wrestling per hour. With an impressive 22 minute per hour average, it was still four minutes less than ROH this week.

This week, Superstars became the fifth show to have more than 4,000 minutes of wrestling. If they continue to have approximately 12 minutes of wrestling per show, we will be able to talk about Superstars and 5,000 around the summer of 2016. Next week should definitely see three shows pass the next barrier and a fourth is possible.

Smackdown passed 1,400 matches this week. With Impact passing 1,200 matches and Main Event passing 300 matches the week before, it should be three in a row when Raw passes 1,700 matches this week. Since many people curse Superstars on a weekly basis, it may just be a coincidence, but we have hit 666 matches on that show since February 2010.

The time for the Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady versus Marcus Louis and Sylvester Lefort match was from the bell until Marcus attacked Sylvester.

The time for the Tadarius Thomas versus Adam Page match is from the opening bell until Tadarius Thomas leaves the ring and goes to the back.

The times for the participants in the Elimination Match on Impact were:
Eric Young: 11 Minutes
Jeff Hardy: 11 Minutes
Bobby Roode: 15 Minutes
Austin Aries: 15 Minutes

The wrestling times below cover the wrestling that takes place during the show so commercials are not included. All times are rounded to the closest minute (examples: a 4:23 match will be listed as 4 minutes while a 4:32 match will be listed as 5 minutes and anything under a minute is rounded up to a minute).
