In watching the network it got me thinking back in time. After Superbrawl 2 when Luger left WCW for WWE I know he joined the WBF for a year. But why wasn't he able to join the WWE roster right away in 1992? I thought it would have been cool if he had joined Flair and Mr.Perfect to form a faction. Or at least been a part of Mania that year in the Hoosier dome.
Luger has a contract with WCW that included a limited number of dates (similar to what Brock Lesnar has now). When he lost the WCW Title to Sting and left WCW, his dates had been used up but there was still time left on the actual contract so he had to wait for it to expire before he could appear on WWE TV.
The IC champ lost to the MITB holder this week, which gave me an epiphany of sorts. With the way the IC champ has been relegated to losing to top guys (often within the first hour of Raw/Smackdown), and the way the MITB holder has been pushed into a prominent main event position (often wrestling or appearing in the last hour or even closing the show), the MITB briefcase has become the top secondary title in WWE. Let me reiterate: a briefcase has become more important than a title belt rich in history and tradition. Do you agree, and what are your thoughts?
Yes it has. You are correct. The briefcase means you are at or near the top of the card. The IC belt means you are stuck in the middle of it. It’s the new reality of WWE.
According to WWE VS WCW Monday Night Wars, WCW hired Nash and Hall and the last WWF star was Bret Hart. Did WCW tried to sign Michaels, HHH and undertaker? Did WCW thought they were b class superstars?
Triple H was coming up the card at the time. Shawn Michaels was too, but he was pretty close to being a star at that point. Undertaker was ascending as well. Taker didn’t have a great run in WCW and had no interest in ever going there. H and Michaels were still under contract to WWE.
Why do people put Cena into the same category as Austin, Rock & Hogan? To me, that's a very elite group ...everyone in it did huge business across the board, from attendance at RAW, house shows, to merch and everything in-between. Cena never pulled in numbers anywhere close...the upper deck on RAW is usually always empty and blacked out...house shows with Cena on-top are lucky to get 5,000 people. usually. People say Cena is this generation's Hogan...I don't see it. Shouldn't it be he's this generation's Bret Hart (minus the wrestling ability), being pushed by a machine that was much bigger than back then?
He is the top guy and as such people compare him to top guys from other generations. And to be fair, he does sell a ton of merchandise and has headlined WrestleManias that have drawn huge houses and over a million buys. I think he is cut below the guys you mentioned but they are all timers. He is certainly a legitimate top guy.
Has a wrestling promotion ever done an angle where someone is paying wrestlers to take a dive for money? That seems like a story that would write itself.Â
Not that I ever remember. We have had things like The Finger Poke Of Doom in WCW (where Hulk Hogan poked Kevin Nash in the chest and allowed him to be pinned) but I don’t remember a sustained angle where guys were paid to take dives.
