BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING BACK AT THE WEEK IN WRESTLING ON TELEVISION FROM WWE, TNA, AND ROH

By Richard Trionfo on 2014-08-31 07:18:24
As this week comes to a close, so does the second third of the year. Ever since we got close to 200 minutes, we have seen four straight weeks of declines and we are down almost 40 minutes from the end of July. For the second week in a row, Raw won but they were down 7 minutes from last week when they actually hit the 50 minute mark.

For the first time in six weeks, Smackdown finished in second place with their first week over 30 minutes in 5 weeks. Impact finished in third place but was only 1 minute behind Smackdown. Main Event finished in fourth place, almost by default with a 7 minute advantage over NXT. Superstars fell into the single digits with only 8 minutes of wrestling.

It has been seven weeks since Raw hit double digits and they accomplished it this week. When you add Smackdown’s totals for the week, those two shows had more than half of the matches on television.

There was an increase in the number of one and ten minute matches. Main Event and Smackdown had the ten minute matches while NXT and Smackdown hosted the three one minute matches this week.

Only Main Event and Impact averaged more than five minutes per match this week. If Superstars maintains the averages for the last three weeks, we will finally see the show’s average match length hit the six minute mark.

NXT had their 50th one minute match this week, while Raw and Smackdown have combined to have 350 of the 493 one minute matches. Next week should see three or four shows pass milestones if they maintain their totals from this week. NXT hit the 800 match mark with its total from this week.

Main Event had its 100th episode this week. Over those 100 weeks, they have had 2,143 minutes of wrestling for an average of 21.43 minutes per show. There have been 279 matches meaning that there was an average of just under 3 matches per show. There have been 93 ten minute matches and 4 one minute matches. The average match on Main Event is 7.68 minutes.

Because the month does not officially end until Sunday, the totals for August will show up in next week’s column. Even though the information has already been tabulated for the month, some time constraints prevent me from doing the overblown analysis at this time.

Since this week’s episode of Ring of Honor featured matches from Philadelphia that were not part of a specified television taping, the matches do not qualify for the column. The matches on the show were Jay Briscoe and Mark Briscoe versus Hanson and Raymond Rowe that was 8 minutes; Adam Page and Tadarius Thomas versus RD Evans and Moose that was 4 minutes; and Cedric Alexander versus Michael Elgin that was 16 minutes.

The wrestling times below cover the wrestling that takes place during the show so commercials are not included. All times are rounded to the closest minute (examples: a 4:23 match will be listed as 4 minutes while a 4:32 match will be listed as 5 minutes and anything under a minute is rounded up to a minute).
