BY THE NUMBERS: LOOKING AT THE WEEK IN TELEVISION FROM WWE AND TNA

By Richard Trionfo on 2014-08-24 07:39:06
For the first time since July 7th, and only the fifth time since Wrestlemania, Raw had fifty or more minutes of wrestling on an individual show. This allowed Raw to return to the top of the weekly totals. Impact continued its streak of weeks with more than 30 minutes of wrestling and extended it to 4 weeks, finishing in second for the fifth time in eight weeks (the other three weeks saw Impact win the week). Smackdown barely finished in third place, beating Main Event by only one minute. NXT dropped by ten minutes to finish in fifth place. Superstars moved up to sixth place only because Ring of Honor did not qualify for this week’s totals.

The 162 minutes of wrestling this week was 18 minutes lower than last week’s total and the lowest total in seven weeks. Five of the previous six weeks had Ring of Honor television to allow us to have more wrestling than this week. The last week without Ring of Honor saw 166 minutes of wrestling and was the last time that Raw was over 50 minutes.

When you look at the individual match times this week, you will find something strange. There was only one match over ten minutes this week, the Dean Ambrose versus Seth Rollins match from Raw. When you consider the other 28 matches on television this week, the second longest match was between Alicia Fox and Emma on Superstars. The third longest match of the week was 8 minutes long and every show but Superstars and Smackdown had an eight minute match. There were a total of seven matches that were eight minutes long. The longest match this week on Smackdown was 7 minutes long and would be tied with two other matches for the tenth longest of the week.

There was only one one minute match this week, and it was the first time since the week of February 3rd that there was a one minute match during the week and it did not include at least one from Raw or Smackdown. The one minute match from Superstars was the first one since the week of July 19, 2013 when Ryback wrestled the Brooklyn Brawler. This is the second time since Thanksgiving 2012 that there has been a one minute match on Superstars.

The last time that we had a ten minute match from Superstars it was the week of September 16, 2013. This is the longest current drought for a show to have a one or ten minute match.

We passed the 8,200 minute mark on Raw this week. Main Event passed 2,100 minutes. While no milestones were reached with match totals, we do have a mirror image total for matches with 6,336 total matches in the 235 weeks of this column.

Because this week’s Ring of Honor did not take place at a specific television taping, the matches do not qualify for this column. The matches on this week’s show were Rocky Romero versus Tommaso Ciampa that was 7 Minutes, and ACH versus Jay Lethal that was 21 Minutes. There was also a segment for the RD Evans versus Moose match that never happened because Moose joined with Evans.

The wrestling times below cover the wrestling that takes place during the show so commercials are not included. All times are rounded to the closest minute (examples: a 4:23 match will be listed as 4 minutes while a 4:32 match will be listed as 5 minutes and anything under a minute is rounded up to a minute).
