DIVA RETURNS, NEW ANIMATED SERIES DEBUTS ON WWE NETWORK, ROSS ADDED TO HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE AND MORE NEWS

By Mike Johnson on 2014-03-17 09:48:18
If you missed it over the weekend, Layla El returned to the ring for WWE for the first time since September 2013. She had been out of action with some personal issues and for a pretty big part of that period, the belief within the company was that she wasn’t going to be returning.

WWE Network has added “Slam City” to their Original Programming in the VOD section. Based on the Mattel toy line of the same name, the series of animated shorts are based on the premise that a new character, The Finisher, has fired all of the WWE stars, who have to venture into their home, Slam City, and get new jobs. It’s all very silly, Looney Tunes inspired stuff but there’s a cute charm to them as well. There are four episodes up now featuring John Cena, Damien Sandow, Big Show, Alberto Del Rio, Kane and Santino Marella. The show was originally slated to debut online on Royal Rumble weekend.

This week’s Wrestlemania Rewind will focus on John Cena’s Wrestlemania in-ring debut against Big Show at Wrestlemania 20. This week’s WWE Countdown will look at the biggest “backstabbings” in the business. If they don’t have Barry Windham turning on Lex Luger to join the Four Horsemen in 1988, well, then I demand a recount!

Also added to the VOD section are three episode of the Legends of Wrestling roundtables, featuring shows on Monday Night Raw, Important Moments in wrestling and Texas wrestling personalities. Thanks to Ian.

Mike Motley sent word that the 12/22/91 Madison Square Garden event in the WWE Network VOD area is actually the event from 11/30/91.

Zack sent word that the AJ Lee vs. Natalya match on Main Event last weekend was actually the longest WWE Divas title bout in history

The Tragos/Thesz Museum issued the following:

Jim Ross and Jason Sanderson added to HOF committee

WATERLOO, Iowa—Two influential figures in professional wrestling will take an active role in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum. Jim Ross and Jason Sanderson have been added to the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame’s selection committee.

“Both Jim Ross and Jason Sanderson have had a major impact on the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame, and professional wrestling as a whole,” said Gerald Brisco, president of the selection committee. “I’m honored that both will help lead us.”

Ross was the 2011 recipient of the Lou Thesz Award. He is one of the most recognized names in professional wrestling. Ross is best-known as a professional wrestling commentator and for his work with World Wrestling Entertainment.

“I am honored to have been asked to take a more active role in this great organization,” said Ross. “In our lives, we can’t move forward if we are unaware of our past.”

Sanderson has the unique distinction of being honored three times by the George Tragos/Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame. Like Ross, Sanderson was a recipient of the Lou Thesz Award (2008).

“My awareness and appreciation of wrestling’s heritage is what led me to become involved with Dan Gable Museum,” said Sanderson. “Their efforts to preserve professional wrestling, as well as promote the legacy of wrestlers, showcases the best our sport has to offer.”
