THIS DAY IN HISTORY: CHRIS BENOIT WINS STAMPEDE GOLD

On this day in history in ....

1965 - Raul Reyes defeats Rey Mendoza for the Mexican Light-Heavyweight Title in Mexico City, Mexico. 

1989 - Chris Benoit defeats Johnny Smith in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to win the Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight Title.  This ended Smith's third reign as champion and started Benoit's third run with the belt. Smith had defeated Benoit for the belt almost seven months earlier. 

1997 - WCW Monday Nitro on TNT defeated WWF Monday Night Raw on USA in the Monday Night Wars, earning a 3.4 rating to Raw's 2.3.  Nitro was headlined by The Giant (Big Show) defeating World Champion Hulk Hogan via DQ, Dean Malenko defeating U.S. Champion Eddie Guerrero in a non-title match, and Jeff Jarrett defeating Chris Benoit.  Raw saw The Undertaker defeat Crush via DQ, Rocky Maivia defeat Davey Boy Smith via countout, and Triple H & Jerry Lawler defeat Goldust & Marc Mero via DQ. 

2001 - Steve Bradley defeats Spellbinder in Corinth, Mississippi to unify the Power Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Title with the Memphis Championship Wrestling Heavyweight Title.
