CHIKARA IN NYC PREVIEW FOR TOMORROW

By Joshua Higham on 2012-11-17 11:18:00

Chikara presents “The Cibernetico Rises” November 18, 2012 at the Highline Ballroom in New York, NY. Belltime is 1 pm.

Cibernetico:
Eddie Kingston, Ultramantis Black, Hallowicked, Frightmare, Shane Matthews, Scott Parker, Gran Akuma, Tim Donst
vs.
Kevin Steen, Jimmy Jacobs, The Bravado Brothers, The Young Bucks, and The Briscoe Brothers

First, the rules, if you’re unfamiliar: Each competitor on both teams will be numbered 1-8. This will be the “batting order.” The match begins with #1 vs. #1, with each teams’ respective #2 on the apron. All other competitors will be on the arena floor in order. If #1 leaves the ring or tags out, #2 would come in, and #3 would get on the apron. #1 would go to the back of the line on the floor. When one competitor is eliminated, the next in line would come in next. For example, if #4 is pinned, #3 will now tag out to #5. There can only be one winner of the match. If all competitors from one team have been eliminated, the remaining team would have to face off against each other until only one remains. Previous Cibernetico winners include: Jigsaw, Gran Akuma, Icarus, Claudio Castagnoli, Jimmy Olsen, Carpenter Ant (Pinkie Sanchez), Eddie Kingston, and Sara del Rey.

Current ROH World Champion Kevin Steen and Chikara Grand Champion Eddie Kingston were announced as the captains of the teams last month. Steen was the first to announce his team (http://youtu.be/ojdU6ORF0T8), culling from the rosters of two of his home promotions, PWG and ROH. The following week, Wink Vavasseur announced his choices for Kingston’s team (http://youtu.be/Cx5xbSaAbd4), continuing Vavasseur’s antagonism towards the Grand Champion. That’s not to say Wink gave him a bad team. Steen’s team includes three men who hadn’t been in a Chikara ring in a long time: Jimmy Jacobs, Steen’s SCUM stablemate who made his first Chikara appearance in 7 years last weekend, and The Briscoes, two of Steen’s biggest rivals who haven’t been in Chikara in 5 years. Then a part of FIST, Gran Akuma, this Sunday on Team Kingston, actually got the pinfall win over the Briscoes in their only Chikara match. Akuma’s occasional trios partners these days, 3.0, join Team Kingston, standing across the ring from the Bravado Brothers, who are on Team Steen. Their rivalry has spanned both Chikara and Ring of Honor, with 3.0 blaming the Bravados for their loss of the Campeonatos de Parejas. The current Campeones de Parejas, the Young Bucks, are in their second Cibernetico, this time on Team Steen. Their teammates in last year’s Cibernetico and frequent opponents throughout 2012 (including the King of Trios finals and a Campeonatos de Parejas defense), the Spectral Envoy, are on Team Kingston. The final member of Team Kingston, Tim Donst, is a wild card, Vavasseur’s “emulsifier.” Donst’s placement on the team is intriguing because of his past feud with Hallowicked, who shaved him bald in June, and his growing feud with Eddie Kingston, whom he attacked at Night 2 of King of Trios. Donst is now on a mission to save pro wrestling and said on Twitter yesterday: “@ChikaraKingston @KILLSTEENKILL The wrestling world is going to be so much better after the 2 of u kill each other at Cibernetico. Goodluck!”

Marty Jannetty and The 1-2-3 Kid vs. The Heartthrobs

Marty Jannetty and the 1-2-3 Kid held the WWF Tag Team Championship for a week in the January 1994. Eighteen years later, they reunited for the Tag Gauntlet on Night 3 of King of Trios, winning the final two falls, defeating the Powers of Pain and Los Ice Creams. Now, they’re a win away from challenging the Young Bucks for the Campeonatos de Parejas. Standing in their way are the Heartthrobs, a former WWE tag team who debuted in Chikara in Portland last July. Romeo Roselli and Antonio Thomas teamed with the Young Bucks to take on Jigsaw, Mike Quackenbush, and The Spectral Envoy in a losing effort that night.

Dasher Hatfield vs. Icarus

Icarus was originally scheduled to take on the intergalactic luchadora, Saturyne, but a training injury will take her off the card. Stepping up to replace her is the Old Timey King of Swing, Dasher Hatfield. It will be the second time in two nights these two face off with this match also scheduled for the Wrestling is Fun event the night before in Allentown (available as a live free-per-view at smvod.com). Back in August at the Baseballtown charity event, Dasher Hatfield scored the pin on Icarus in tag action.

“Mr. Touchdown” Mark Angelosetti vs. Soldier Ant

The current Young Lions Cup takes on one of the original ants in Chikara, Soldier Ant, in non-title action. Angelosetti had a rather controversial weekend last weekend in Chicago and Cleveland, putting an end to the feral pigeon, Sapphire, before getting a win against The Mysterious and Handsome Stranger due to excesivo de castigo the next day. Soldier Ant has been in a limbo of sorts since the Chikarasaurus Rex iPPV in June, only having one win in Chikara action in that time. Sure, he’s been saddled with teammates he doesn’t want for the past five months, but a win against the current Young Lions Cupholder would be a huge boost for Soldier Ant.

The Shard vs. Fire Ant

The Shard survived another match, standing across the ring from Mike Quackenbush. The twist now is that in a recent Event Center (http://youtu.be/zjhL5MKTvnQ), Jigsaw was seen going into The Shard’s locker room in Cleveland, ignoring Bryce Remsburg’s request for an explanation. HIs opponent in New York is a familiar one, Fire Ant. Fire Ant was injured and taken out of action at the hands of the GEKIDO before the Chikarasaurus Rex iPPV in June. Fire Ant, for the past few months, has been forced to team with one of The Shard’s GEKIDO stablemates, assailANT.

Arrive early enough, and participate in Billy Kumohara’s “Quiz Present Crisis Battle” before getting into the building.
