By Mike Johnson on 2012-06-29 08:00:00

June 29th

On this day in history in ....

1973 - Kim Sung Ho defeats Alfonso Dantes for the EMLL NWA Light Heavyweight Title in Mexico City, Mexico.

1986 - The AWA announces that since World Champion Stan Hansen refused to wrestle Nick Bockwinkel in Denver, Colorado, Hansen was being stripped of the title and Bockwinkel was named the new champion.  In truth, Hansen had already been booked to defend the AWA World Title on All Japan Pro-Wrestling shows in July. When Hansen was told to drop the title beforehand, he refused, since his loyalty was to All Japan and Giant Baba, and he knew that Baba was advertising a AWA title defense on the July tour.  Hansen went to Japan, still in possession of the AWA Title belt (a new belt was made for Bockwinkel) and "defended" it, dropping the belt after he won the NWA International Title (an All Japan belt) from Jumbo Tsuruta.  Hansen would run over the AWA Title belt with his truck and mail the bent remains to Verne Gagne.  Bockwinkel would take the mangled belt and had it restored.

1992 - Tom Prichard defeats Brian Christopher for the USWA Southern Heavyweight Title in Memphis, Tennessee to win the title that had been vacated a week earlier when a match between the two ended in a no-contest. This began Pritchard's fifth title reign.  On the same show, Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett defeated The Moondogs (Spot & Spike) to win the USWA Tag Team Title.

1998 - Steve Austin defeats Kane for the WWF World Heavyweight Title in Cleveland, Ohio, ending Kane's reign after less than 24 hours.  This begins Austin's second WWF World title reign.

1999 - The Hardy Boyz defeat Faarooq & Bradshaw for the WWF World Tag Team Title in Fayetteville, North Carolina.  This was the first of an eventual five runs with the belts for Matt & Jeff Hardy.

2008 - WWE held their Night Of Champions PPV.  Here is Richard Trionfo's original report on the show:

2009 - WWE broadcast Raw.  During the broadcast, Mark Henry, Evan Bourne and Jack Swagger were all moved to Raw as part of a "mini-draft" that Vince McMahon claimed was put into motion by Donald Trump during Trump's brief run as "Raw owner." Richard Trionfo filed the following TV report:

We are live from San Jose, California and your announcers are Michael ‘Viper in a Shark Tank’ Cole and Jerry ‘I think I know the way’ Lawler.

Tonight’s show starts off with Vince McMahon coming to the ring and he is walking as if he paid too much to ‘buy back’ his flagship brand. Vince says that if his friend Donald Trump was here, he would have presented a commercial free broadcast. He also would have given everyone their money back. Vince asks if the fans want him to do the same thing. Vince says that he cannot go commercial free because he has to make money. Vince says that he can give everyone their money back. He can do it, but he won’t do it. Vince blames Trumps for a fifteen superstar trade that took place as well as no General Manager on Raw with a guest host who has the same authority as General Manager. Vince says that he is going to shake it up VKM style so the guest host is Dave Batista.

Batista comes to the ring in a brace and he gets his pyro. Batista lets out a yeah before he addresses the fans. He says that it feels good and he is excited about tonight because everyone is going to have some fun. Batista says that there will be a four man tournament to see who faces Randy Orton at Night of Champions. Those matches will be Miz versus John Cena and MVP versus Triple H. Batista says that when Vince asked him, he said there was no way he would get in a suit because he is a fighter and a competitor. He is not a host . . .

He is interrupted by Randy Orton, Ted DiBiase, and Cody Rhodes who come out. Orton tells Batista he shouldn’t have come back. He asks Batista if he is a glutton for punishment. He asks what is keeping them from tearing the rest of Batista apart.

Batista says that nothing is stopping them except the fact that if Orton looks at him the wrong way, they are all fired. Batista says that he did not want to come back until he was ready to fight. However, he was told that he would have unlimited power and he could do whatever he wants. Batista says that he can make Orton’s life a living nightmare.

Orton reminds Batista that it is already a nightmare. He barely survived Three Stages of Hell. He was hit with a sledgehammer and can barely walk.

Batista says that nobody wants to hear Orton whine. Batista tells Orton that he will not be defending the title. He tells Orton to be worried about the trade. He says that Raw acquired five new superstars but Orton will only have to face three of them in a gauntlet match. Batista tells Orton he knows how much Orton loves three-on-one fights. He tells Orton it is time he found out what it was like to be on the receiving end.

We go to commercial.
