THIS DAY IN HISTORY: ONE OF RICKY STEAMBOAT'S GREATEST MATCHES

By Buck Woodward on 2011-03-12 08:00:00

March 12th

On this day in history in ....

1983 - Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood defeat Sgt. Slaughter & Don Kernodle in a steel cage for the NWA World Tag Team Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Steamboat commented on the match in an interview here on PWInsider.com, saying "It's a match that I've always brought up when people bring up the Wrestlemania III match with Randy Savage or the matches with Ric Flair, the series in 1989.  There are hundreds of other matches that when you just wrestled in your territory every night, people didn't have the opportunity to see it because there wasn't the television exposure or the Pay-per-view exposure. I've always had that match in my memory banks as one of my greatest matches. It was a match that I had a lot of fun with, from conception to finish, and we probably ran a three month program with Don Kernodle and Sgt. Slaughter.  Everything just clicked, and it was a ball of fun."

1984 - Mr. Wrestling II defeats The Junkyard Dog in New Orleans, Louisiana to win the Mid South North American Heavyweight Title, ending JYD's fourth and final North American title reign.

1990 - Jerry "The King" Lawler defeats Jimmy Valiant in Memphis, Tennessee for the USWA Unified Heavyweight Title, the fifth of an eventual 27 runs with the title.

1993 - Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka defeats Glenn Osbourne in a tournament final in Radnor, Pennsylvania to become the ECW Television Champion.
