JERRY LAWLER SUES CORY MACLIN OVER MEMPHIS WRESTLING TRADEMARK

By Mike Johnson on 2010-07-10 08:22:02
WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler has filed a lawsuit against former Memphis Wrestling promoter and announcer Cory Maclin over the rights to the "Memphis Wrestling" trademark, according to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal.

The lawsuit, which was filed yesterday, claims "Mr. Corey Maclin’s direct actions that fraudulently conveyed upon Jerry Lawler’s trademark and copyright interest ‘Memphis Wrestling’ in the intangible product.”

Lawler recently launched the "Jerry Lawler's Memphis Wrestling" TV series, which is about six weeks into it's run.  Maclin had previously promoted the last incarnation of Memphis Wrestling.

Maclin, currently a Democratic candidate for Memphis County Clerk, told the newspaper that the lawsuit is politically motivated as Lawler supports Republican Wayne Mashburn for that post.

Maclin sued WWE in 2008, claiming WWE sabotaged a Memphis Wrestling event at the FedEx Forum in Memphis that was to feature Hulk Hogan vs. Jerry Lawler in the main event.  Lawler pulled out of the show, publicly citing that since he was under contract for WWE, he couldn't wrestle as the show would be taped for Hogan's reality show on VH-1.  Lawler was replaced by Paul "Big Show" Wight, who was not under contract to WWE at the time.  As it turns out, no footage from that event was used on the Hogan reality series and it was likely heat between Hogan and WWE at the time led to Lawler pulling out.  WWE settled the suit in May of that year with the terms sealed and confidential.

As of this writing, I was unable to find any record of any trademark for the term "Memphis Wrestling."
