WHY SHAWN MICHAELS IS MR. WRESTLEMANIA, ANGLE-JARRETT, GIVING AWAY PPV QUALITY MATCHES ON FREE TV, UNIVERSAL'S CONNECTION TO WWE AND TNA AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2010-03-10 10:00:00

Do you know or heard anything about Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett now that Jarrett is back around more full-time and running live events with Angle, if they are getting along or talking. It seems storyline wise they teased us at the beginning when Jarrett came back of Angle/Jarrett feud over the real-life situation. Do you think we will eventually see a storyline there?

From what I have been told they are cordial with each other and things have cooled off a lot.  Provided both of them stay with the company long enough I would be shocked it they didn't do a storyline with them.  It's right up Vince Russo's alley.

I was planning on buying "Turning Point" when it came out on DVD because I read that it had two great matches on it. I changed my mind and won't buy it because TNA showed both of those matches on television. A similar thought came to mind with TNA showing some great PPV matches on "Epics," for instance, showing three good Kurt Angle matches which could have been part of a future DVD, or some other collection. What do you think is the better idea, showing the best matches on TV to get casual viewers to watch more, or holding them back with the hopes it will entice people to buy a DVD?

There are two schools of thought here.  One is to sell everything and make what you can.  The other is to try and put the good stuff on TV as the company tries to expand and hook new fans.  Given where they are as a company right now, I understand why they are giving away good product right now.  Down the road they can still do DVDs, especially if they attract a new fan base that just started paying attention.  Another factor to consider is that TNA has to feed the beast at Spike. Spike is their TV partner and has some say in what the company does.  Obviously, Spike is looking for ratings.

I know Shawn Michaels is an all-time great. but with a 6-10 record at Wrestlemania, how can he call himself 'Mr. Wrestlemania'?

I will answer your question with a question: What does a record matter in a worked entertainment product?  Answer: It doesn't.  He can call himself that, legitimately, because he has great matches at the biggest show of the year.

So the WWE has their TV deals with NBC/Universal. The Impact Zone is located@UNIVERSAL studios. No conflict? Or is Universal just keeping a hand in both pots?

When you talk about huge corporations, different division run independently.  For the theme parks, TNA is a good customer.  If Universal wasn't there home, someone else would be so it makes sense to make money where you can.  I don't see any conflict as long as TNA doesn't air on the NBC/Universal networks and even then, it would only be a conflict for Vince McMahon.  It wouldn't bother me at all.

I went to a wrestling site today and the headline was, "Head to head battle may be happening". I clicked on it, and it was about fighting stuff that I couldn't care less about. How do you feel about that headline, and also about fooling wrestling fans like that? MMA and Wrestling are as close to being the same thing as the NFL and Fantasy sports. That is why I like PWInsider.com the best. You cover wrestling and don't lie in your headlines.

First off, thank you for saying that.  For years, we have chosen not to mix MMA coverage with Pro Wrestling coverage because as you said, they are very different.  Some sites feel differently and all I can assume from that is that the majority of their readership either agrees with them or doesn't care when a headline like the one you mentioned appeared on their site.  My own take is that if you cover two different genres, you should be more clear in the headline. I am a big fan of the headline tease because, let's face it, clicks help pay the bills.  But I also feel that the teases should also not be misleading.  On whatever site that ran, maybe that is the case.  In the end, you now know how they do business so it's up to you to decide if you will continue to go there.
