THIS DAY IN HISTORY: VADER LOSES HIS MASK, MERO BEATS SABLE, FIRST WWWF WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS CROWNED

By Buck Woodward on 2007-05-31 08:00:00

May 31st

On this day in history in ....

1971 - WWWF International Tag Team Champions Tarzan Tyler & Luke Graham become the first WWWF World Tag Team Champions.  On television, it would be said that they defeated Dick The Bruiser & The Sheik in a tournament in New Orleans for the belts, but the tournament was fictitious and in reality it was just a name change for the championship.

1998 - WWF held their "Over the Edge" Pay-per-view in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Here are the results:
- LOD 2000 defeated Skull & Eight Ball when Animal pinned Eight Ball.
- Jeff Jarrett defeated Steve Blackman.
- Marc Mero defeated Sable. If Sable won, she would be released from the contract she had with Mero.  If she lost, she would have to leave the WWF.  Sable was allowed to pick a wrestler to represent her, but instead said she would fight for herself.  Mero said he wouldn't fight her, and after the bell rang, laid down on the mat and told her to pin him. Sable went to cover him, but Mero tricked her, grabbing a cradle for a quick pin.
- Dick Togo, Men's Teioh & Sho Funaki defeated TAKA Michinoku & Bradshaw when Togo pinned Michinoku.
- Intercontinental Champion Rocky Maivia defeated Faarooq.
- Kane defeated Vader in a Mask vs. Mask match. As a result, Vader had to take off his mask.
- Owen Hart, Kama Mustafa & D'Lo Brown defeated Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Billy Gunn & Jesse Jammes when Hart pinned Helmsley.
- WWF World Heavyweight Champion Steve Austin defeated Dude Love (Mick Foley). Vince McMahon was the special referee, Gerald Brisco was the special timekeeper, and Pat Patterson was the special ring announcer, and they kept trying to change the rules during the bout so Dude could win.  In the end, the Undertaker chokeslammed Patterson and Brisco through announce tables, and Austin pinned Dude with a stunner, using an unconscious Vince McMahon's hand (he was knocked out by a chair shot earlier) to count the pin.

1999 - Bam Bam Bigelow & Diamond Dallas Page defeat Perry Saturn & Kanyon (subbing for an injured Raven) for the WCW World Tag Team Title. Kanyon would end up joining Bigelow & Page as the "New Jersey Triad" and WCW Commissioner Ric Flair would later allow any two of the three members to defend the championship.

2004 - During an edition of Raw from Montreal, Quebec, La Resistance (Sylvan Grenier & Rob Conway) defeat World Champion Chris Benoit & Edge to win the World Tag Team Championship when Edge was pinned after accidentally spearing Benoit.
