THIS DAY IN HISTORY: FUNK BURNS CACTUS, MALENKO-GUERRERO SERIES BEGINS AND MORE

By Buck Woodward on 2007-04-15 08:00:00

April 15th

On this day in history ....

1995 - ECW held their Hostile City Showdown '95 show at the ECW Arena in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Here are the results:
- Mikey Whipwreck, with Hack Myers, defeated Stevie Richards, with Raven, when Whipwreck pinned Richards with a rana. Post match, Raven attacked Mikey, and Myers went after Raven. The Pitbulls came out to help Raven and Richards, and were beating down Mikey and Myers until the Public Enemy made the save.
- Tsubo Genjin defeated Tony Stetson with a pair of kneedrops and a legdrop.
- Axl Rotten came out and allowed the crowd to pick the stipulations for his match with Ian Rotten. Choices included a strap match, an I Quit match, a baseball bat match, a barbed wire baseball bat match, or a "Bad Breed Death Match", in which every single weapon and gimmick was used. The fans wanted the Bad Breed Death Match.
- Ian Rotten defeated Axl Rotten in Bad Breed Death Match, pinning him after a chairshot to the head, while Axl's head was wrapped in barbed wire.
- Raven defeated Tommy Dreamer via disqualification when Dreamer DDT'd the referee. After the match, Dreamer gave Beulah a piledriver for the first (but not the last) time.
- ECW Television Champion Eddie Guerrero vs. Dean Malenko ended in a 30 minute time limit draw. The fans gave both men a standing ovation for their efforts. This was the first match of their classic series in ECW.
- The Sandman defeated Shane Douglas, with Woman, to win the ECW World Heavyweight Title. Douglas had Sandman in a crossface chickenwing, but Woman (who had turned on Sandman the previous week to go with Douglas) hit Douglas in the leg with a Singapore cane. Douglas fell back, with Sandman on top, and Sandman got the pin for the title. Woman had double-crossed Douglas. Post-match, Douglas put on a Monday Night Raw shirt, and implied that he was leaving for WWF (which he wasn't yet) by exiting through the crowd.
- ECW World Tag Team Champions The Public Enemy defeated The Pitbulls when Johnny Grunge hit Pitbull #1 with a chain, and Rocco Rock rolled him up from behind for the pin.
- 911 defeated Ron Simmons with a chokeslam from the second rope.
- Cactus Jack defeated Terry Funk with a DDT in a violent brawl that saw Funk using a broken bottle on Cactus at one point. Post-match, the Sandman caned Cactus, and Terry Funk brought out a flaming branding iron and burned Cactus in the chest with it.

1995 - Brickhouse Brown & The Gambler defeated PG-13 for the USWA Tag Team Title in Memphis, Tennessee.

1996 - Brian Pillman was injured in a single vehicle accident in Kentucky. Pillman apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his humvee, and drove off the road. He needed reconstructive surgery on his ankle, and his planned ECW feud with Shane Douglas was put on hold. Pillman was signed by WWF shortly afterwards (this was during Pillman's famous shoot/work where he tricked WCW into giving him his release, making him the hottest free agent in wrestling), despite the injury. However, when the ankle did not heel properly, Pillman had to have it re-broken and reconstructed again.

2001 - Wife Beater defeated John Zandig for the Combat Zone World Heavyweight Title.
