THIS DAY IN HISTORY: SABU LEAVES ECW

By Buck Woodward on 2007-03-04 08:00:00
March 4th

On this day in history in ....

1984 - Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood defeated Don Kernodle & Bob Orton, Jr. for the NWA World Tag Team Title in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ironically, Kernodle & Orton had won the belts in a tournament two months earlier after Jay Youngblood & Ricky Steamboat vacated the belts due to Steamboat retiring.

1986 - Tully Blanchard defeated Dusty Rhodes for the NWA National Heavyweight Title in Spartanburg, South Carolina. These were the only National title reigns for either man, who also traded the NWA Television Title during their feud.

1991 - Tatsumi Fujinami defeated Big Van Vader for the IWGP Heavyweight Title in Hiroshima, Japan. This would begin the fourth of Fujinami's record six runs with the belt. This would also mark the end of Vader's 3rd and final IWGP Title reign, tying him for second with Shinya Hashimoto and Kensuke Sasaki (to date) for most IWGP Title reigns.

1996 - Jerry Lawler defeated Mabel in a tournament final for the USWA Unified Heavyweight Title in Memphis, Tennessee, starting his 22nd reign with the belt. The title had been vacated by Jeff Jarrett due to a back injury.

2000 - ECW returned to the ECW Arena in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This would be Sabu's last night with the company, although the fans in the arena would never see him. Sabu had tried to jump to WCW in February of 2000, and WCW.com even posted a picture of Sabu on their website, with a story about his impending return (he had a brief run there in 1995). However, ECW owner Paul Heyman had a valid contract with Sabu (which Sabu felt had been breached), and Heyman enforced that contract with Sabu. Sabu returned to ECW, and for legal reasons, Paul Heyman had all communication with Sabu, even finishes for matches, written out and given to him. When Sabu arrived at the ECW Arena, he was given a match where he would lose in a three way bout with Super Crazy and CW Anderson, with Super Crazy winning. Sabu, without saying anything to Heyman, took his bags and left, along with friend and referee John Moore. Sabu would never be seen in the original ECW again.

Results of the show saw:
- Lance Storm & Justin Credible defeated Gedo & Jado.
- Little Guido defeated Kid Kash.
- Danny Doring & Roadkill defeated The Pitbulls.
- Rhino defeated Spike Dudley.
- Super Crazy defeated CW Anderson.
- Nova, Chris Chetti, & Balls Mahoney defeated Da Baldies (Angel, Tony DeVito, & Vic Grimes).
- Raven & Mike Awesome defeated Tommy Dreamer & Masato Tanaka to win the ECW Tag Title Title.
- The Sandman defeated Yoshihiro Tajiri.

2001 - The Boogie Knights defeated Psycho Sam Dudley in a handicap match for the USA Pro-Wrestling Tag Team Title in Queens, NY, then on the same show lost the belts to The Sicilian Shooters.
