On this day in history in ....

1940 - Tarzan Lopez defeats Octavio Gaona in Mexico City, Mexico to win the NWA World Middleweight Title.

1963 - Just over three months before the historic title change at Madison Square Garden, WWWF World Champion Buddy Rogers wrestles Bruno Sammartino in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with the match ending in a draw.

1969 - Hans Mortier defeats The Gladiator (Rick Hunter, not Mike Awesome) in Tampa, Florida to win the NWA Florida Heavyweight Title.

1974 - The first wrestling event ever held at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, New York (later the site of several WWF PPV events and the NWA Bunkhouse Stampede PPV, as well as Raw, Smackdown and Nitro broadcasts and tapings) was held, with WWWF World Champion Bruno Sammartino defeating Stan Stasiak in the main event.

1981 - Long before becoming "Hacksaw", a young Jim Duggan wrestled on a WWF television taping in Hamburg, Pennsylvania, losing to heels Sgt. Slaughter and Hulk Hogan in separate matches.  

1986 - Gino Hernandez died of a drug overdose at the age of 29. Hernandez had made himself into a star in Southwest Championship Wrestling and World Class Championship Wrestling. He was part of a top heel team with Chris Adams, feuding with the Von Erichs as the "Dynamic Duo". The team split, and were in the midst of an angle where Hernandez had "blinded" Adams. Hernandez was found dead in his Dallas apartment of acute cocaine intoxication. Several wrestlers who were close to Hernandez, including Tully Blanchard and Kevin Von Erich, have insinuated in interviews that they feel foul play may have been involved in his death, as Hernandez had a reputation for living a wild lifestyle that including gambling and drugs.

1991 - Jerry Lawler & Jeff Jarrett defeat The Fabulous Ones (Stan Lane & Steve Keirn) for the USWA Tag Team Title in Memphis, Tennessee. The title had been taken from the Fabulous Ones and held up following a controversial match between the two teams on January 28th, 1991.

1995 - Extreme Championship Wrestling held their "Double Tables" event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the ECW Arena. This was also part of the first ever ECW Internet convention. Here are the results of the show:
- The Pitbulls & Jason The Terrible defeated The Young Dragons & Hack Myers. After the match, Hack Myers beat up the Dragons, then spanked valet Angel when she came out and kissed Myers.
- Tommy Dreamer defeated Stevie Richards with a shot to the groin.
- Mikey Whipwreck defeated Paul Lauria.
- Ian Rotten defeated Axl Rotten with his feet on the ropes for leverage.
- Chris Benoit defeated Al Snow with a dragon suplex.
- ECW World Champion Shane Douglas defeated Tully Blanchard.
- Cactus Jack defeated The Sandman in a Texas Death Match. Cactus scored seven falls while Sandman only scored one before being unable to answer the bell. This bout is now available on the "Mick Foley's Greatest Hits And Misses" DVD set.
- Sabu & The Tazmaniac (Tazz) defeated The Public Enemy (Flyboy Rocco Rock & Johnny Grunge) to win the ECW Tag Team Championship in a "Double Tables" match. Post-match, Chris Benoit, standing on a table, powerbombed Sabu off the top rope through a table in the ring with Rocco Rock laid out on top of it.

2001 - Women of Wrestling holds a PPV/Television taping at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California. Terri Gold defeats Danger to win the WOW World Heavyweight Title, and Caged Heat defeats Harley's Angels in the finals of a 12-team tournament for the World Tag Team Title. The promotion would fold two months later.

2001 - In Columbia, South Carolina during a house show, K-Kwik (Ron Killings) defeats Raven to win the WWF Hardcore Title for the second time. Under the 23/7 defense rules, Crash Holly then defeated Kwik to win the title (Holly's 14th Hardcore title win). However, Raven then beat Holly to get the title back (his fourth Hardcore title win). So, after two title changes amongst three wrestlers, the title ended up back where is started, with Raven. They had done the same title switches the night before in Greensboro, North Carolina.

2002 - Jazz defeats Trish Stratus for the WWF Women's title during a live edition of Raw in Las Vegas, Nevada. This ended Trish's first run with the title, and began Jazz' first title reign.  Also on this episode, Stephanie McMahon revealed to Triple H that she was pregnant, shortly after Triple H had turned down her idea of renewing their wedding vows on television (this is all storyline, by the way).

2003 - Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin defeat Los Guerreros for the WWE (Smackdown) Tag Team Title at a Smackdown taping in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earning their first championship gold in WWE. The show also sees WWE Champion Kurt Angle defeat Chris Benoit.

2005 - During an edition of Raw from Saitama Super Arena in Japan, Yoshihiro Tajiri & William Regal defeated Rob Conway & Sylvan Grenier to win the World Tag Team Championship when Tajiri kicked Sylvan in the head following the green mist after Sylvan tried to him Tajiri with a flagpole.
