THIS DAY IN HISTORY: THE MEGAPOWERS EXPLODE, THE XFL DEBUTS AND MORE

By Buck Woodward on 2007-02-03 08:00:00
February 3rd

On this day in history in ....

1962 - Luther Lindsay & Ricky Waldo defeat Rikidozan & Toyonobori in Tokyo, Japan to win the All-Asian Tag Team Title.

1973 - Johnny Powers defeats Karl Von Krupp to win the third of an eventual six NWF North American Heavyweight Championships.

1984 - The British Bulldogs wrestled each other in Sapporo, Japan, as the Dynamite Kid defeated Davey Boy Smith via countout.  As a result, Kid moved on to face the Cobra for the vacant WWF Junior Heavyweight Title.

1986 - WWF ran at the Medowlands Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey with Bruno Sammartino & Paul Orndorff defeating Roddy Piper & Cowboy Bob Orton in a steel cage in the main event.

1989 - WWF holds their second NBC prime time "Main Event" special, live from the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The show did an 11.6 broadcast rating. Here are the televised results:
- The MegaPowers (Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage) defeated The Twin Towers (Akeem & Big Boss Man) when Hogan pinned Akeem. During the match, Savage accidentally knocked down Miss Elizabeth, and Hogan carried her to the locker room. When Hogan returned to the match, Savage left Hogan. Hogan won the match by himself, and in a backstage confrontation later, Savage attacked Hogan. This would begin the build toward the Wrestlemania V main event between the two.
- Ted DiBiase defeated Hercules.

1990 - Rex King & Steve Doll defeat Robert Fuller & Brian Lee for the USWA Tag Team Title in Memphis, Tennessee, the first of three title runs for King & Doll, who were also known as Well Dunn in WWF.

1996 - ECW held their "Big Apple Blizzard Blast" card at the Lost Battalion Hall in Queens, New York. The show saw the final ECW appearance of Woman, as 2 Cold Scorpio literally carried her out of the building and put her in a limo after Sandman decided to stay with Scorpio in ECW rather than go with Woman to WCW. Results of the show saw:
- Taz defeated The Shark Attack Kid, and had a confrontation with Bam Bam Bigelow.
- The Headhunters defeated Axl Rotten & El Puerto Ricano.
- The Eliminators defeated Cactus Jack & Mikey Whipwreck to win the ECW World Tag Team Championship. After the match, Cactus turned on Mikey (the two had not been getting along due to Cactus' relationship with Raven). The Pitbulls then attacked the Eliminators, cutting the hair of Perry Saturn.
- Tommy Dreamer & Shane Douglas defeated Raven & Stevie Richards.
- AAA Welterweight Champion Rey Misterio, Jr. defeated Juventud Guerrera.
- Chris Jericho defeated Rob Van Dam. Ironically, this match was not put on the home video release as the crowd was less than kind to the two newcomers (Jericho had not even appeared on ECW TV in the area yet)
- Buh Buh Ray Dudley defeated J.T. Smith.
- Sabu defeated Mr. Hughes.
- The Sandman & 2 Cold Scorpio defeated The Gangstas.

1996 - The NWA held the first Eddie Gilbert Memorial Brawl in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Here are the results:
- Knuckles Nelson defeated Inferno Kid.
- Glenn Osbourne & Rockin' Rebel defeated Blue Thunder & Harley Lewis via DQ.
- Tommy Gilbert vs. Dory Funk Jr. ended in a draw.
- The Lost Boys defeated The Green Connection and Bad Attitude in a three way match to win the U.S. Tag Team Title.
- Johnny Gunn defeated Tommy Rich.
- Kevin Lawler, HW Starr & Debbie Combs defeated Twiggy Ramirez, Ric Ratchet & Angel.
- NWA North American Champion Tommy Cairo defeated Derrick Domino.
- Ace Darling defeated Kid Flash.
- Doug Gilbert defeated Jerry Lawler.
- NWA World Heavyweight Champion Dan Severn defeated Al Snow.

1995 - Beau James & The War Machine defeated Eddie Bruiser & Danny Christian for the SSW Tag Team Title.

2000 - Vince McMahon announced he was creating the XFL (Xtreme Football League) to debut the following year on NBC. The concept was that the games would be held on Saturday and Sunday nights, and that the season would begin the week after the Superbowl.

2000 - Big Dick Dudley defeated Sgt. Slaughter for the USA Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Title.

2001 - The XFL debuts with 10.3 rating on NBC. It would quickly fall from there, and the league would shut down after one season.

2001 - In Greensboro, North Carolina during a house show, K-Kwik defeated Raven to win the WWF Hardcore Title for the first time. Under the 23/7 defense rules, Crash Holly then defeated Kwik to win the title (Holly's 13th Hardcore title win). However, Raven then beat Holly to get the title back (his third Hardcore title win). So, after two title changes amongst three wrestlers, the title ended up back where it started, with Raven.

2004 - At a Smackdown taping in Cleveland, Ohio, Rikishi & Scotty 2 Hotty defeated The Bashams to win the WWE Tag Team Championship when Rikishi pinned Doug with a Samoan Drop.  Also on this show, it was announced that Torrie Wilson & Sable would appear together in Playboy magazine, the first (and to date, only) time two WWE Divas have appeared nude together.
