MAGNUM TA DISCUSSES DISNEYWORLD ISSUES

By Mike Johnson on 2017-08-15 12:35:00

As PWInsider.com noted last night, local media in Florida has started to pick up on the story of former NWA United States champion Magnum TA, who was partially paralyzed in a car wreck in 1986, being turned away from Disneyworld's Magic Kingdom due to wishing to drive his Segway in the park.

TA, who brought his nine-year old twins to Florida for a vacation with his wife, said the treatment left him "in a dark place."

As I wrote yesterday, Disney parks have banned Segways for safety concerns and TA uses one (modified with a seat) to get around.  The park offered to rent TA an electric scooter but did not have any that would have allowed him to operate the vehicle with his left hand (as he is paralyzed on his right side).  Disney makes their Segway policy very public on their website.

In an interview with WFTV, Magnum said that he was turned away from the Magic Kingdom's main gate and was told he would have to return his Segway to his car.

"It's 2017. You can't tell someone how to overcome their physical challenges," TA told the station.  "It's not acceptable. I won't accept it from anybody because I've been there and come from the ground up to where I am today."

Magnum explained that he uses a modified Segway that allows him far more mobility and freedom movement than he would have otherwise.

When asked for comment, Disney told WFTV: "For safety reasons, we restrict the use of two-wheeled devices given the unique environment of our theme parks. There are various other options available to our Guests, such as the use of wheelchairs, four-wheeled electric scooters and an electric standing vehicle, which do not pose the same concerns.”

TA argued in the WFTV piece that Disney claims it is safety concerns but has no problem renting electric scooters to "little old ladies" that require "ten feet to turn around" while there are children "running around" in the park.

TA told the station he spent the remainder of the vacation at Universal Studios and Seaworld without incident.
