DONOVAN DIJAK VS. WALTER AND MORE: 8/13 BEYOND WRESTLING LIVE REPORT

By Paul Crockett on 2017-08-13 16:36:00

Beyond Wrestling “Bye Bye Beautiful”

Somerville, MA

August 13, 2017

It’s the first half of a doubleheader with PROGRESS in this venue, as well as the final match for Donovan Dijak in Beyond before he heads to Orlando.  He takes on WALTER in the main event in what should be a classic.

YOUTUBE EXCLUSIVE: Rory Gulak vs. Wheeler Yuta

Yuta is fresh off a tour with Michinoku Pro.  He’s had a series of outstanding matches with Maxwell Jacob Friedman in Beyond.

Gulak jumped Yuta before the bell and it was hot and heavy from there.  Lots of fast paced offense for the most part.  Gulak tried an Octapus, but Yuta rolled out and they traded pin attempts.  They went back and forth until Yuta caught Gulak in a cross legged tombstone position and turned it into a submission for the victory.  Very good match for the six minutes they had.

WINNER: Wheeler Yuta

Dan Barry came out with Rex Lawless, Mike Verna and Ryan Galeone.  He cut a promo burying the fans, saying they don’t matter.  He said Verna and Galeone are meat and potatoes while the fans are parsley, and no one cares or remembers parsley.  He said unlike last time when they got opponents who aren’t serious, they demand someone very serious.  Out comes EYFBO.

MATCH ONE: Mike Verna & Ryan Galeone (with Barry & Lawless) vs.  EYFBO (Angel Ortiz & Mike Draztik)

Hot start as EYFBO did double dives to the floor.  They did a lot of double team stuff in the ring when they got back inside.  Really impressive stuff from EYFBO as always.  While the ideas Verna and Galeone had were great, they still seem like they’re trying to fully gel.  When they do, it’ll be outstanding.

Really impressive athleticism from Verna and Galeone considering their size.  EYFBO looked to have things under control at the end.  Draztik was on the top rope when Lawless hit him with his crutch from the floor and the referee called for the bell.  Not an ideal finish, but if it leads to a series with Team Pazuzu, it’ll be worth it.

WINNERS: EYFBO by DQ

MATCH TWO: JT Dunn vs. Martin Stone

There was no card announced other than the main event, so Stone was a surprise and the crowd loved it.

Lots of really good technical work on the mat in the early going.  Stone ended up easily getting out of a Dunn hold and taunting him that he’s not on his level because he’s from England.  JT responded with a cartwheel and yelled “USA!”

They ended up in a striking battle in the middle of the ring.  Being that close, I can confirm Stone throws REALLY hard.  After a strong style-type battle in the middle of the ring, Stone went for a cutter, but Dunn blocked it on the mat, popped up and hit a superkick for a two count.  Stone turned him inside out with a lariat for a two count, followed by a crossface, but Dunn rolled out of it.  They both hit each other with brutal shots and took turns kicking out at one for big pops.  Dunn ended up rolling Stone up in the ropes, but the ref didn’t see it and he got the three count.

After the match, Stone shook Dunn’s hand and held it up in a sign of respect.  Very good match.

WINNER: JT Dunn

MATCH THREE: Brandon Watts vs. Zenchi (formerly Shynron)

Zenchi was the guest referee for Watts big win over AR Fox at Americanrana.  He was very impressed and challenged Watts to a match afterwards.

Lots of acrobatic moves by Zenchi early on.  They are athletically impressive, but they didn’t come off as particularly dangerous.  It seemed as though these two guys were having trouble clicking, but their ideas were really good.

They were able to pick it up a little bit toward the end, but the finish fell a bit flat.  Shynron missed a 450 from the second rope but landed into a tumble.  Watts got him in a pinning predicament and got the pin.

After the match, Watts went for a handshake and was denied.

The match was a struggle, but if they get to do it again, they should be able to kill it.

WINNER: Brandon Watts

MATCH FOUR: Doom Patrol (Jaka & Chris Dickinson) vs. Chosen Bros (Matt Riddle & Jeff Cobb)

Cobb was another big surprise.

This was really intense and really fun to watch.  Everyone was throwing really hard shots and daring each other to throw more.  There was a lot of interplay between Riddle and Dickinson.  Cobb deadlifted Jaka and shifted him in mid-air four times before finally suplexing him, which was incredibly impressive.  Good double teaming from Riddle and Cobb.

When it was finally Dickinson and Riddle, it was even more intense.  They were hitting each other so hard.  Jaka with a couple of Exploder suplexes, with Riddle landing bad on one.  Luckily he was okay. Somehow, the intensity between Dickinson and Riddle got even higher.  It was like a “can you top this?” battle in terms of hitting each other.

Good double team moves toward the end, with each team having to make a save to keep the match going.  Riddle got take out with a huge running Pazuzu Bomb.  Jaka and Dickinson hit a Total Elimination variation on Cobb for the win.  Really good match.

After the match, they all hugged.

WINNERS: Doom Patrol

MATCH FIVE: John Silver vs. Zack Gibson

Gibson on the mic before the match to nuclear heat.  He said he is Liverpool’s Number One, but soon, he will be Beyond’s Number One.  He was being drowned out by boos.  He buried the US fans for being a parody of British fans and called Somerville a shithole.  He ran down Silver, saying when the bell rings, he’s going to drop him.  I’m not doing this promo justice.  It was absolutely incredible.

Gibson went to work on Silver’s arm and worked him over.  He did a fantastic job building up the heat for Silver’s comeback.  When Silver finally got his offense going, the crowd got really into it and it was really good as usual.  His strikes are tremendous.

They ended up trading shots in the middle of the ring and it was really well done.  Very cool finishing sequence.  Gibson called to end it with some sort of suplex, but Silver ducked out.  He hit a Batista Bomb and a running Punt for the win.  Great match.

WINNER: Zack Gibson

MATCH SIX: “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams vs. Travis Banks

Originally, Banks was going to team with his regular partner TK Cooper as South Pacific Power Trip.  However, Cooper broke his foot last night, so its singles action for Banks.

These two were just taking turns teeing off on each other.  It was chops and kicks galore.  They went back and forth the entire match trying to outdo each other.  They traded nearfalls and submission attempts near the end.  Banks ended up finishing it with a Disaster Kick-type variation onto a prone Williams for the win.  Very entertaining, well-done match.

WINNER: Travis Banks

MAIN EVENT: Donovan Dijak vs.  WALTER

It’s Dijak’s final match for the promotion.  He got a tremendous reception during his entrance.  Walter was always on Dijak’s short list of wrestlers he wanted to work.

This was hard hitting and intense.  It wasn’t just strikes, as they were going for big moves as well.  Walter no-sold the Feast Your Eyes and responded with a big lariat for a double down.  Back on their feet, Walter almost had Dijak out with the sleeper when Dijak recovered and hit Feast Your Eyes for the victory.  Really solid main event.

After the match, Walter shook his hand and left.  Dijak took the mic and thanked everyone in the building and especially his trainer Brian Fury.  He said it’s not lost on him that it’s because of Beyond that he’s going where he’s going.  He said ROH was a great platform for him, but it wasn’t until his work in Beyond that he really started to get noticed.  He said thank you, he’ll miss Beyond very much, and kissed the mat.

WINNER: Donovan Dijak

This was a great show from Beyond with some fantastic matches.  It wasn’t very storyline laden, but it was really satisfying.
