ROH IN LAKELAND, FL REPORT AND THOUGHTS: SILAS YOUNG VERSUS ADAM COLE FOR THE WORLD TITLE

By Richard Trionfo on 2016-10-23 02:19:00

Ring of Honor continued its Road to Final Battle Tour with their second show in Florida.  After their show in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night, they moved on to the city that will host Supercard of Honor, Lakeland.

Here are the results from the show:

There was a dark six man tag match, but there was an issue with the sound so I did not get all of the names.

In a Women of Honor Match, Kennadi Brink defeated Amber Gallows with an Anaconda Vice.

Kyle O’Reilly defeated Donovan Dijak (with Prince Nana) with a brainbuster.  Throughout the match, O’Reilly worked on both the right arm and the leg.  Kyle was able to counter a number of power moves by Dijak throughout the match.

Kenny King and Rhett Titus (with Caprice Coleman) versus Jay White and Alex Shelley (with Chris Sabin) was scheduled as the next match, but Rhett Titus started the Cabinet promo about the protest during the Code of Honor, but Kenny King and then Caprice Coleman talked about their frustration with Ring of Honor and they left the ring and went to the back.

Jay White takes the mic and he talks about how he came to wrestle and he makes a challenge to anyone in the back.

Jay White and Alex Shelley (with Chris Sabin) defeated War Machine when White pinned Raymond Rowe after a version of a Michinoku Driver.  Despite not having the tag team experience of War Machine, Shelley and White worked well together.

Bobby Fish joins Kevin Kelly on commentary for the next match.

Adam Page defeated Mark Briscoe with Right of Passage after a low kick when the referee was out of position due to Adam Page.  Page attacked Briscoe before the bell but Briscoe was able to recover and it was an even match until Page pulled the referee out of the way to set up the finish of the match.

Punishment Martinez and BJ Whitmer defeated Mr. Wrestling 3 and Bull James when Martinez pinned Mr. Wrestling 3 with a side effect after Whitmer sent Mr. Wrestling 3 through a table with an exploder.  This match was not officially announced as a Fight Without Honor or any other type of match without disqualifications, but the referee gave a lot of latitude.  All four men battled outside the ring for the first part of the match.

After the match, Martinez gives Whitmer a piece of the table to attack Mr. Wrestling 3, but James comes into the ring with a chair to chase Martinez and Whitmer away.

Jay Lethal defeated Kamaitachi with Lethal Injection.  One of the highlights of this match was Kamaitachi hitting a sunset flip power bomb sending Lethal from the apron to the floor.

There was a brief intermission following the match.

Cheeseburger and Will Ferrara defeated the team of Shaheem Ali and Leon St. Giovanni and the team of Sho Tanaka and Yohei Komatsu when Cheeseburger pinned St. Giovanni after a palm strike when St. Giovanni went for a springboard move.

Adam Page joined Kevin Kelly on commentary for the next match.

Jay Briscoe defeated Bobby Fish by disqualification when Page pulled Briscoe out of the ring and sent him into the guardrails after a few minutes.

Fish gets on the mic and he mentions the ROH Television Title Match that Page has next week in Baltimore, but he says he wants a piece of Page tonight.   Jay Briscoe says that he also wants a piece of Page tonight, so he suggests a Triple Threat Match.  Fish is okay with it but Page says no and then he hits Briscoe with the mic and the match is started.

Adam Page defeated Jay Briscoe and Bobby Fish when Page pinned Fish after hitting Rite of Passage.  The match started with Fish and Briscoe trying to see who could hit Page the hardest.  Briscoe hit a JayDriller on Page and then as the referee was focused on Fish, Page kicked Jay low and sent Briscoe to the floor before Page finished off Fish.

Dalton Castle and Colt Cabana defeated Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian when Castle pinned Daniels after a Bang-o-Rang.  There were a number of comedy spots during the match, including attempts at interference while the referee was dealing with members of the opposing team.  They also did the spot where Kazarian is looking away from the ring as Daniels feeds him Castle’s arm.  They did this twice and on the third attempt, Castle is able to give Daniels’ arm to Kazarian to work over.  Castle and Cabana went to the floor to show Kazarian the mistake he was making.

Jay Lethal joined Kevin Kelly for the main event.

Adam Cole defeated Silas Young to retain the Ring of Honor World Title with the Last Shot.  Young used the guardrails on multiple occasions during the match to wear down Cole.  Cole hit Last Shot earlier in the match, but Young was able to get to the rope to stop the count.  Young was also able to fight through a figure four leg lock before getting to the ropes.  The crowd got behind Young as the match progressed and it seemed like a majority of the people in the building wanted to see a title change.  Cole hit two super kicks to the back of the head followed by the Florida Key and The Last Shot.

After the match, ended, Young offered his hand to Cole and Cole eventually shook it.
Young leaves the ring and Jay Lethal enters the ring.  Cole leaves the ring.  Lethal says that it is a matter of time until he is the World Champion again.  Lethal then mentions that he is excited about returning to Lakeland and that when Ring of Honor is back in Lakeland, he will be a two time Ring of Honor World Champion.

Other Thoughts

As a subscriber to New Japan World, I was very happy to see Sho Tanaka, Yohei Komatsu, and Jay White in person.

If you like wrestlers working counters into submissions, you will probably like the O’Reilly/Dijak match.

I was pleasantly surprised to see War Machine versus Jay White and Alex Shelley.  Despite the fact that White has had a bit of a push on television, I was a bit surprised that he would get the victory over War Machine.

Once they announced that Adam Page was going to be part of the match with Bobby Fish and Jay Briscoe, I thought they were going to have Page pin Jay so he could claim that he beat both Briscoes in the same night.  However, it made sense to build to next week’s television title match to have Page pin Fish.

Ring of Honor returns to Lakeland for Supercard of Honor on April 1, 2017.  Supercard of Honor will be held in the arena at the Lakeland Center.
