WILL THE CROWD TURN ON GOLDBERG?, RODDY PIPER-WWE, TRIBUTE TO TROOPS AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2016-10-15 10:00:00

So the first month of the WWE Network is free, and also through a loop hole if you threaten to cancel they give you a free month also, but my question is this, With Goldberg v. Lesnar on the horizon, WWE isn't going to make huge bank off of new subscribers who just sign up for the network long enough to get the free month and the included match. So how is this lucrative for them?

It would be lucrative if they can entice everyone who signs up for that match to stay on board going forward.  The match is effectively a spectacle that they are using to try and get fans who aren't already subscribing to see everything WWE has to offer and want to stick around.

I know it’s a little after the fact, but now that we’re over a year since the passing of Roddy Piper, I can’t help but be a bit puzzled by the lack of follow up and celebration of his life on WWE’s part.  Not to take anything away from Dusty and/or Ultimate Warrior, but each of them had weeks of programming dedicated to their passing.  We now have annual items like the Dusty Tag Tournament, the Warrior award, etc. There were two ‘Legends’ Roundtables on Dusty.  Piper got the prototypical music video that was shown on Raw and streamed on the network for a few weeks and the 10 bell salute…that’s it—no full show dedication with clips and such. Even the Table for 3 which was one of the last things he filmed for anything was unceremoniously dumped with little fanfare or promotion a few weeks later.  With all the opportunity for content, retrospectives, etc that the network is capable of supporting, I’m shocked that not more was done…so much opportunity there to do a ‘Piper’s Pit Block’, etc.  As one of the cornerstones of the industry and backs that WWE/F were built on, he did (and still does) deserve more celebration of his accomplishments.  With that, why do you feel things played out in such a scaled down fashion.

I honestly have been pretty gobsmacked that the company hasn't done more to go out of their way to honor and celebrate Piper's passing.  To me, even with the strength of Hulk Hogan and the celebrity of Mr; T, Wrestlemania 1 wouldn't have worked without the right villain that fans wanted to see get their ass kicked.  Roddy was that guy and in a lot of ways, completely responsible for the success of WWF nationally.  I don't know if it was that Dusty was actively working for the company when he passed while Piper was not, but as someone who fell in love with pro wrestling specifically because of Piper, I've always felt that WWE dropped the ball when it came to honoring his legacy.  My hope is that the company will honor him with one of those statue unveilings at Wrestlemania AXXESS in the near future.  If anyone's work deserves to be eternally celebrated, it's Piper's.

The wrestling universe has changed drastically since Goldberg left.  I'm somewhat excited to see his return this Monday.  However, I have a fear that once his music hits their will be an initial pop of the crowd, but once her starts talking, the fans are going to turn on him.  He's shown in the past he doesn't handle heckling well.  Do you think this will happen as well?  Or do you feel he's been gone long enough the fans will accept him?

I think nostalgia is a strong drug and the audience has obviously been interested in the idea of a Goldberg return.  My personal feeling is that the less of Goldberg that is seen and the less he does physically before he actually wrestles, the better.  In my opinion, it would be the law of diminishing returns.  I don't see the audience turning on him, but the less "special" he is as an attraction, the more likely it will be that the audience looks for the next big thing or return.
