NOTES AND PHOTOS FROM 2K'S WWE 2K17 SUPLEX CITY EVENT, INITIAL THOUGHTS ON WWE'S LATEST VIDEOGAME

By Mike Johnson on 2016-08-22 10:54:00

2K Games held a huge launch party for the WWE 2K17 videogame, which will be released this October, on Friday 8/19 in NYC at Sir Stage in mid-town Manhattan, turning the space into a real life "Suplex City" complete with official Super City police car, a massive "Suplex City" sign in lights with a post-apolacypitc feel. You can check out photos from that below.

A number of WWE stars attended the event, including a rare appearance from Brock Lesnar, who even did a few short interviews alongside Paul Heyman in his unique fashion (including one that is currently in the Elite section of PWInsider.com with yours truly).

Bill Goldberg was also in attendance, doing interviews for the media.  While there was a lot of anticipation for a potential faceoff with Brock Lesnar, that did not happen at the event.  Goldberg noted to PWInsider.com that he had a double knee surgery six weeks ago.  He made it clear he wasn't looking for a WWE return and was surprised when WWE approved his including in the videogame, since it had been turned down for years when the videogame producers had pitched it.  Goldberg had been very coy with all who have asked about a potential Summerslam appearance this weekend.

Other WWE talents in attendance, some of whom walked the red carpet and some of whom were available for interviews - AJ Styles, Charlotte, Sasha Banks, Enzo Amore, Colin Cassady, Sheamus, The Miz, Maryse, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Kevin Owens.

I had a chance to play an advance copy of the WWE 2K17 while at the event.  While I would hardly certify as a hardcore gamer, it did feel like 2K had streamlined the game and moved it forward.   The renderings of the WWE personalities were better than any game I can ever recall and the ability to brawl to the back, down a backstage corridor and even into offices (including Vince McMahon's!) added a lot of fun value to the game.  There was also an improved ladder match including a fun game within to master in order to grab the belt to win the match.  Fans will also be thrilled to know that Shinsuke Nakamura will be featured, complete entrance and all, as a downloadable character.  While I only had limited time with the game due to the long line of people waiting to sample it, I was really impressed with it.  2K and Yukes have really outdone themselves with this incarnation.

Other notes from the evening: The night ended with a performance from 'Lil Jon.....Hip hop star Wale was in attendance.
