WWE CHANGES PPV NAME?

By Mike Johnson on 2016-06-23 22:40:00

Ticketmaster is now listing the 9/25 WWE PPV in Indianapolis as "Clash of Champions", replacing the WWE Night of Champions name.

As reported on PWInsider.com, WWE filed several trademarks on the Clash name a few weeks back.  The Clash of Champions originated as a live TBS special that aired opposite WWF Wrestlemania 4 in March 1988.  Jim Crockett Promotions and later WCW (after purchasing JCP) continued the specials until the mid 1990s, when the appeal of the show was diluted due to all the top notch wrestling presented weekly on WCW Nitro.

WWE has released a DVD on the Clash in the past and features all the Clash events in the Vault section of the WWE Network.

WWE has been utilizing the Night of Champions name as a PPV since 2007.  PWInsider.com has reached out to WWE to confirm the name change.

Should WWE utilize the name, it would be ths second NWA/WCW marquee event title resurrected for use as a WWE PPV event, following The Great American Bash.
