As noted several days ago on PWInsider.com, WWE filed a trademark for the name "Legion of Doom", a moniker used by WWE Hall of Fame tag team The Road Warriors during their careers and used as their primary team name during their initial WWE run in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
With the appearance of Paul Ellering as the mouthpiece for NXT team The Authors of Pain, there was speculation the name might be used by WWE for that team. That speculation is now rendered moot as WWE abandoned the trademark application on 6/13.
As noted in Road Warrior Animal's biography on the team, the Legion of Doom nickname was lifted from the 1978 animated series "Challenge of the Superfriends" featuring DC Comic book characters. The group of villains led by Lex Luthor was named The Legion of Doom. The narration of the series would feature the phrase "Meanwhile, Back at the Legion of Doom" regularly in the series.
