GLOW RETURNING AS NETFLIX COMEDY SERIES

By Mike Johnson on 2016-05-31 12:00:00

Deadline.com is reporting that Netflix has ordered a 10 episiode first season for "GLOW" a new series based on the 1980s women's professional wrestling outfit The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, which aired for several years and even did a national tour based on the success of the series' syndicated TV series.

The series, created by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (Orange is the New Black), was inspired by the documentary on GLOW that was released in 2012 and will tell the story, set in the 80s, of an actress who uses the promotion and pro wrestling as her last-ditch attempt to become a star.

The series is described by Deadline as a comedy.  The show will be executive produced by "Orange Is the New Black" creator/executive producer Jenji Kohan and co-executive producer Tara Herrmann.   Given that "Orange" is such a monster for the streaming service, expect Netflix to put their muscle behind this series when it debuts.

No word yet on casting, shooting or whether any of the women from the original GLOW series will be featured in some fashion.  The pilot script for the series was finished a few months back.
