TAGUCHI VS. KUSHIDA STEALS THE SHOW: NJPW BEST OF SUPER JUNIORS DAY SEVEN REPORT

By Matthew Macklin on 2016-05-29 22:29:00

NJPW Best of the Super Juniors Day 7, May 29:

Michael Elgin, Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Volador Jr defeated Beretta, Will Ospreay & Tomohiro Ishii

This was such a fun opener. Ospreay & Volador put on an incredible lucha display. Their tournament match should be spectacular. Ishii & Tenzan hit each other really hard. Ospreay hit a Vader Bomb, playing off Vader's online criticisms of his match with Ricochet. There was a lot of action in the last minute. Ospreay saved Volador's life when he caught his moonsault to the floor. Elgin pinned Beretta with an Elgin Bomb.

Yuji Nagata, Tiger Mask IV, Jushin Thunder Liger & Manabu Nakanishi defeated Jay White, Juice Robinson, Bobby Fish & Katsuyori Shibata

Robinson was all fired up here. He and Nakanishi had some really funny exchanges, with Robinson shouting all sorts of expletives at him.  Nagata & Shibata did their best to maim one another as usual.  The finish came when Nagata pinned White with a Back Drop Hold.

Block A: David Finlay (2) defeated Gedo (2)

Yes, you read that correctly. David Finlay won a match! His first ever win in the BOSJ and his first win in NJPW over someone other than a young lion. Gedo worked over Finlay until he made a fiery comeback with lots of uppercuts. Gedo took some short cuts and got frustrated at not being able to put Finlay away. He raked the eyes to escape a Stretch Muffler.  Finlay scored the major upset when he caught Gedo with a surprise roll up. Finlay sold his shock at winning and Gedo threw a tantrum. This was really well done.

Block A: BUSHI (2) defeated Rocky Romero (4)

This was a really solid match. BUSHI used some tricks like crotching Romero around the ring post. Romero returned the favour later on. BUSHI hit his missile like suicide dive. Romero got some nice near falls with some knee strikes. BUSHI misted Romero and got a near fall with a compactor before finishing him off with a diving Codebreaker.  These were BUSHI's first points of the tournament. He could make a late run and finish high in the block.

Kenny Omega, Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi & Chase Owens defeated Captain New Japan, Ricochet, Satoshi Kojima & Yoshitatsu

This was very similar to the match on the previous show involving these guys. There was some fun stuff between Omega & Ricochet. Captain had the crowd believing he might win with both a roll up and a Rock Bottom. Omega won when he pinned Captain after a Slingblade and High Fly Flow. Thankfully Yoshi & Yujiro were kept to a minimum.

Hirooki Goto, Kazuchika Okada & YOSHI-HASHI defeated EVIL, SANADA & Tetsuya Naito

This was yet another great match between these teams. YOSHI was worked over when SANADA got the better of him. Okada & Naito became legal and had some great interactions that the crowd went crazy for. EVIL & Goto went at it with hard shots. The ring cleared out and left them at it. Goto pinned EVIL after an Ushigoroshi and a GTR. A brawl broke out after the match as SANADA went after YOSHI. CHAOS trapped EVIL in the ring and took shot at him. Goto the challenged EVIL to a rematch from Dontaku.

Block A: Matt Sydal (6) defeated Kyle O'Reilly (6)

These two had a great match in ROH over Wrestlemania weekend and this was even better. This was such a great match with a little bit of everything. Hard hitting, technical wrestling and high flying. O'Reilly used his submission skill to cut off Sydal every time he took to the air, eventually forcing Sydal to hit hard like O'Reilly. O'Reilly hit a dropkick from the apron as Sydal sat in a chair. Sydal hit an amazing rana pin out of a Brainbuster.  O'Reilly tried for serval submissions and almost beheaded Sydal with a lariat. Sydal won after a Meteora and a Shooting Star Press. This was a big win for Sydal. This match is worth a watch on NJPW World.

Block A: KUSHIDA (4) defeated Ryusuke Taguchi (6)

This was one of the matches of the tournament so far. This was such a great clean competitive match between these two friends. There was no messing around from Taguchi again here. He used his hip attacks, but not in a comical way. KUSHIDA targeted the arm and Taguchi went after a leg and ankle lock. There were lots of excellent counters and near falls. The best of which came when Taguchi used a tilt a whirl into a Dodon. Taguchi managed to stay out of the Hoverboard Lock, but it was an armbar that gave KUSHIDA the submission win. This was really great.

That leaves Taguchi, O’Reilly & Sydal on top of Block A with 6 points each.
