BILLY WICKS HOSPITALIZED, JOE DOERING UPDATE, JAPW RETURNS TO BAYONNE, YOUNG & EC3 IN NYC, DOCUMENTARIES & MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2016-05-02 13:05:00

Billy Wicks, one of the all time great shooters and tough guys during the territory era and a huge star in the Memphis area, is currently hospitalized in North Carolina after suffering a stroke.  Wicks wrestled from the 1950s until the late 1970s and was a massively huge babyface feuding with Sputnick Monroe.  He was featured in the great "Memphis Heat" documentary.  We wish Wicks and his family the best.

The GofundMe campaign assisting former All Japan Pro Wrestling Triple Crown champion Joe Doering has raised $18,595 thus far in it's attempt to help him offset the medical costs stemming from his brain cancer.  Scott D'Amore promised to match all donations made last week through yesterday and personally matched $7,630.  Doering and his family are very grateful for everyone's assistance.   For more on the campaign, visit www.gofundme.com/joedoering.

Mikey Whipwreck and Mike Mondo have been named the first members of the NYWC Hall of Fame over the weekend.  The promotion will hold a Hall of Fame induction as part of their 5/21 event in Deer Park, Long Island.

Netflix has added the Chris Bell documentary "Prescription Thugs" which examines the misuse of prescription drugs in America, including interviews with former WWE stars Ryan Sakoda and Luther Reigns as the film is inspired by the passing of Bell's brother Mike Bell, who worked for ECW and did jobs for the WWF in the 1990s and early 2000s.  Chris Bell worked on WWE creative in the past and it's a film worth watching.

Also on Netflix now is a new documentary on John Du Pont and his murder of Olympic wrestling Dave Schultz, "Team Foxcatcher."  Schultz was Kurt Angle's friend and trainer.  Angle trained at the camp for a time as well.   Thanks to Ben Bodhi.

Jersey All Pro Wrestling drew around 500 for their return to their original home Bayonne, NJ on 4/30 as they debuted at the BCB Bank Pavillion, which was described to me as basically a large tent.  Since the weather was cold, it wasn't the best place for a show but could be a lot better in the summer months.  The show was designed to be a throwback to the early days of JAPW using mostly names from that era and was headlined by what was billed as Fat Frank's Suicidal Games, sort of a Wargames where fans could bring the weapons.  The match was named for late JAPW promoter Frank Iadevia.  Suicidal was one of the tag lines for the promotion when it was first formed in the late 1990s, so that's where it came in.  In the Suicidal Games, Team Pazuzu (Chris Dickinson & Jaka & EYFBO) defeated a JAPW All-Star team featuring Da Hit Squad & Homicide & Low Ki after Mack turned on Ki but was still KO'd to end the match.   Rhino defeated Charlie Haas (who started here).  JAPW Light Heayweight champion BLK Jeez defeated Archadia.  JAPW Women's champion Kimber Lee defeated Annie Social.  Undercard matches saw Danny Demanto (who has lost a lot of weight) defeating EC Negro, Steve Scott defeating Smiley and Azrieal defeating Joey Janella.  They also held a JAPW Legends Battle Royal won by Magic with names like Lowlife Louie Ramos, Dr. Hurtz, Slayer, Jersey Hurricane, J. Lover, Crazy Ivan and others appearing.  No word on the next show.  For more, visit www.JAPW.net.  Thanks to Irwin Markowitz.
