NEW DAY INDUCTING THE FREEBIRDS, FAVORITE WRESTLEMANIA MATCHES, AWA SUPERCLASH 3 AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2016-03-31 10:00:00

You reported months ago that Kevin Von Erich would induct The Fabulous Freebirds but WWE announced it would be The New Day?

Obviously, WWE decided to make a change before Von Eruch was announced.  The connection is that The Freebirds and New Day were both three man units.  Von Erich is slated to be in Dallas for the WWE Hall.  He would have made the most sense but the decision was made for New Day. WWE likes having "current" talents appearing to help keep the younger audience interested in the Hall.  It should be noted that Hayes has been intricately involved in producing The New Day and is close with the group, so it's not like it's being forced upon him.  I'd be shocked if we didn't see a Freebird/Von Erich reunion, so to speak, in some form at the Hall.

I was wondering what you thought the best Wrestlemania matches you've seen live were?

In no particular order, Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart at Wrestlemania X, which was as perfect a match as you could ever hope for, really stands out.  Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker at Wrestlemania 25 was unbelievable and was one of the most exciting bouts I've ever seen live.  Steve Austin vs. The Rock at Wrestlemania 17 was probably the best Wrestlemania main event ever, just a pure war where they had to pull anything and everything in their arsenal out.

Those are three that come to mind off the top of my head but there have been a lot of others - Angle vs. Shawn Michaels at Mania 21, Undertaker vs. Batista at Mania 23, Michaels vs. Razor Ramon at Wrestlemania 10, Rock vs. Austin at Wrestlemania 15, Angle vs. Benoit at Mania 17, Angle vs. Brock Lesnar at Mania 19, Hogan vs. Rock at Mania 18, Hogan vs. McMahon at Mania 19 and lots of others.

We know Les Thatcher is a great trainer but who trained him?

Our own Les was trained in Boston by the late Tony Santos.

I was wondering about some backstory on the AWA Superclash 3 PPV.  There were multiple promotions involved but it was an AWA show.  Who ran it?  Who booked it?

The show was run by the AWA with the involvement of World Class, POWW Women's Wrestling and Memphis.  Continental was also said to be involved but really were in name only.  Verne Gagne was the one who bankrolled the show, financially.  The show, while pretty entertaining, didn't do well on PPV.

What's the one video library you wish you'd hear was found and is being released on Blu-Ray?

I think it's a three way tie between the old Amarillo territory, Continental and The Pacific Northwest territory, but really, any vintage material that hasn't been properly protected from the elements and the rigors of time, I'd want to see saved and transferred to digital, so it can be properly cleaned up for everyone to enjoy.
