THE JURY IS IN: HOGAN VERDICT IS....

By Mike Johnson on 2016-03-18 19:18:00

The jury is in and Hulk Hogan has to be an extremely happy man.

In the civil lawsuit he brought against Gawker, the website's founder Nick Denton and it's former editor-in-chief AJ Daulerio for releasing clips of his sex tape with Heather Clem, the jury has ruled in Hogan's favor and has awarded him damages over and above what the WWE Hall of Famer was seeking.

Hogan, who sought $100 million, was awarded $115 million.  The breakdown of the amount is $55 million in economic injuries to Hogan and $60 milliion for his emotional distress.  That is all compensatory damages, which means there will likely be additional punitive damages added as well.

Before the verdict even came in, Gawker was publicly stating they would be taking the case to the appeals court, claiming that important evidence related to Bubba the Love Sponge/Todd Clem's statements about the situation and Hogan's knowledge of whether he was being filmed or not were kept from being heard by the jury.  Under Florida law, it is likely that Gawker will have to put up a $50 million bond even while the appeals process is underway.

Hogan began sobbing uncontrollably when the verdict was announced.

Gawker had already stated that a legal loss in the lawsuit would likely mean the end of the site's existence.
