DARREN’S WIN-LOSS RECORDS COLUMN: WEEK 7
Welcome to Week 7 of 2014. Next week we will end the week with our 2nd Pay-Per-View of 2014, WWE Elimination Chamber, so stay tuned for that. Now, to this week’s news & notes.
On Raw, we started the show with Rey Mysterio & The Brotherhood against The Wyatt Family in 6-Man Tag Team action. This was Rey’s 3rd Raw in a row to compete in the opening match. This was Harper & Rowan’s 1st opening match since Smackdown on January 10, Wyatt’s 1st opener since January 13 on Raw, & The Brotherhood’s 1st opener since Raw on January 20. This was the 2nd week in a row that Raw opened up with a 6-Man Tag Match. Since Roman Reigns didn’t compete, The Brotherhood became the only wrestlers to compete on every Raw of 2014. Next, in his 1st match since December 9, 2013, Santino Marella wrestled Fandango. This was Fandango’s 1st win since Smackdown on January 31. In their 1st time as a team, Christian & Sheamus teamed up to face The Real Americans. This was Christian’s 1st tag team match on Raw since June 24, 2013, when he also teamed with Sheamus. Next, in their 1st time wrestling each other in 2014, Dolph Zigger wrestled Alberto Del Rio, after wrestling each other 10 times in 2013, making it the most re-matched match of 2013. After a week off, Alberto Del Rio continued his undefeated streak on Raw, having won 4 matches in a row, before not competing last week. Next in a re-match from Raw on January 27, The Usos wrestled Curtis Axel & Ryback. They also return to action, after not competing last week on either Raw or Smackdown. They also continued their undefeated streak, with 8 straight wins without a loss in 2-on-2 action. In the 1st United States Title Match since October 28, 2013, Dean Ambrose defended against Mark Henry, bringing the Title Match count to 14 overall & 7 for WWE. This was the 2nd week in a row that Raw had a Title Match, as the Tag Titles were defended last week. This was Ambrose’s 1st singles match of 2014 and the 1st singles match of any member of The Shield since Roman Reigns wrestled CM Punk on January 6. This was Mark Henry’s 1st match on Raw since December 23, 2013 and his 1st match overall since Smackdown on December 27. The match ended by Disqualifcation, giving us our 1st Disqualification since January 27. The last time that Ambrose defended the US Title, which was against Big E. Langston, he also lost by Disqualification. Then, we saw The Bella Twins team with Cameron for the 1st time against Aksana, Alicia Fox, & AJ Lee, in the 2nd 6-Person Tag Match of the night. This was the 2nd week in a row that Raw had 2 6-Person Tag Matches. In the main event, John Cena wrestled Randy Orton. This was Orton’s 3rd straight main event and Cena’s 1st main event since Raw on January 27. This was a re-match from the Royal Rumble on January 26. But everyone has been talking about how repetitive WWE has been and how tired everyone is Cena VS Orton. I went to profightdb.com to see how many actual singles matches have taken place between them. Not counting tag team or multiple person matches like Triple Threat, Fatal 4-Way etc, or Battle Royals, John Cena & Randy Orton have wrestled each other 19 times since their 1st match on Raw on November 13, 2005. The other times they competed were: 2/18/07 RAW, 5/7/07 RAW, 8/26/07 SummerSlam, 9/16/07 Unforgiven, 2/17/08 No Way Out, 2/18/08 RAW, 5/12/08 RAW, 8/24/09 SummerSlam, 9/13/09 Breaking Point, 9/28/09 RAW, 10/4/09 Hell in A Cell, 10/25/09 Bragging Rights, 12/14/09 RAW, 9/13/10 RAW, 10/25/10 RAW, 12/15/13 TLC, 1/26/14 Royal Rumble, & 2/10/14 RAW. In comparison, Kofi Kingston & Dolph Ziggler have wrestled each other 27 times since 2009. So, in actuality, they haven’t wrestled that much over the course of 9 years.
On Main Event, we started the show with another 6-Man Tag Team Match, as Sin Cara & Los Matadores took on The Wyatt Family. This was The Wyatts 2014 Main Event debut, Los Matadores’ 1st match on Main Event since January 15, & Sin Cara’s 1st match on Main Event since January 22. This was the 1st 6-Man Tag Match on Main Event since January 29. In the 1st Diva’s Match on Main Event since January 29, Natalya wrestled Aksana. This was Natalya’s 1st match on Main Event since January 29 & Aksana’s 1st match on the show since January 22. Next, Big E Langston wrestled Drew McIntyre. They dropped the Langston from his name, so he is now known as just Big E. So from now, that’s what he will be known as here. This was Big E’s 2nd week in a row on Main Event. This was McIntyre’s 1st singles match of 2014 & 1st match on Main Event since January 29. Big E’s night wasn’t done as Jinder Mahal challenged him to a match, in Mahal’s 1st singles match of 2014 and 1st match on Main Event since January 29. This was the 1st time since The Brotherhood at the Royal Rumble to compete twice on the same show and the 1st time since 3MB on January 15 that someone wrestled twice on Main Event.
On NXT, we started with our 4th 6-Man Person Tag Match of the week, as Bayley, Emma, & Natalya wrestled Sasha Banks, Alicia Fox, & Summer Rae. This was Natalya & Summer’s 1st match on NXT since January 22, Bayley & Sasha’s 1st match since January 29, and Emma & Alicia’s 2nd week in a row. This was the 1st time since Bayley VS Summer Rae on January 9 that a Diva’s Match opened up NXT. Then, we saw the 3rd NXT only Re-Match as Colin Cassady wrestled Aiden English, in a re-match from January 8. Ths was Cassady’s 1st match on NXT since January 29 & English’s 2nd week in a row on NXT. This was the 1st NXT only Re-Match to not feature Alexander Rusev, as the other re-matches featured him versus Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods. Then, CJ Parker, in his 1st match on NXT since January 29, wrestled Tye Dillinger, in his 2014 debut. He last competed on NXT on November 6, 2013. In the main event of NXT, The Wyatt Family returned to NXT for the 1st time since Novemer 6, 2013 for Luke Harper & July 31, 2013 for Erick Rowan, as they faced newcomer Marcus Louis, making his NXT debut and Jason Jordan, who last wrestled on January 15. This was the 1st time all 4 men wrestled in the main event of NXT in 2014. This was the 1st time NXT had a tag match since January 29. This was the 7th week in a row that someone from the main roster competed in NXT. Natalya & The Wyatts also competed on Main Event, making them the 1st wrestlers since Kofi Kingston on January 15 to do that. Alicia Fox also competed on Raw, making her the 1st wrestler since The Miz on January 27 & 29 to compete on Raw & NXT in the same week.
On Impact, we started the show with our 1st Ladder Match of 2014 between Gunner & Ethan Carter III. This was Gunner’s 1st opening match since January 23 & Carter’s 1st opening match of 2014. Magnus & James Storm interfered, forcing the referee to throw the match out, giving us our 1st No Contest in TNA since Impact on January 9. Due to their interference, MVP made the match a Tag Team Ladder Match, making it the 1st time that someone competed twice on Impact. By having 2 Ladder Matches, this brought the Gimmick Match count to 18 overall & 11 for TNA. Next, in their TNA debuts, The Wolves of Eddie Edwards & Davey Richards teamed up with Samoa Joe against The Bro-Mans & Zema Ion. This was TNA’s 1st 6-Man Tag Team Match of 2014. This was also Joe’s 6th week in a row, continuing his streak of the most matches for any wrestler in TNA. Next, we saw the TNA debut of MVP, as he faced Rockstar Spud, in his 1st match since January 23. Then, we were supposed to get Velvet Sky VS Chris Sabin, but the bell never rang, so it will not be counted here. In the main event, the Gimmick Match count went up to 19 overall & 12 for TNA, as we had the 1st ever Casket Match of 2014 between Mr. Anderson and Bully Ray. This was a re-match from Impact on January 16, which was also the last time both men competed on Impact. This was Mr. Anderson’s 1st main event of 2014 and Ray’s 1st main event on Impact since January 2. This was the 1st time since then that either Samoa Joe, Magnus, or Sting were not in the main event of Impact. This was the 1st time in 2014 that Impact did not have a Title Match & the 2nd week in a row that there was no Knockout’s Match.
On Superstars, we had the 3rd re-match between Natalya & Tamina Snuka. They competed on Main Event on January 29 and last week, February 6, on Superstars, making this both Divas 2nd week in a row. Next, in a re-match from this week’s Main Event, Big E wrestled Drew McIntyre. This was the 1st time in 2014 that a match from Main Event was re-matched the next day on Superstars. This was Big E’s 2014 Superstars debut and McIntyre’s 5th week in a row on the show. Natalya, Big E, & McIntyre all competed on Main Event, as well, making them the 1st wrestlers since Natalya & 3MB on January 29 & 30 to compete on both shows in the same week. Natalya also became the 1st wrestler to compete on Main Event, NXT, & Superstars in the same week. This was the 1st time since January 9 that Superstars did not have a tag match.
On Smackdown, we saw our 5th 6-Person Tag Match of the week in WWE, as Daniel Bryan, Christian, & Sheamus wrestled The Shield. This was the 2nd Smackdown in a row that Ambrose & Reigns wrestled in the opening match, this was Rollins’ 1st opener since Raw on February 3, Bryan’s 1st opener since January 13, and Christian & Sheamus’ 1st opener of 2014. Christian went from the main event of last week’s Smackdown to this week’s opener, making that the 1st time since The Shield on Smackdown on January 31 & Raw on February 3 to do that. Next, Mark Henry, Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio, & Jack Swagger competed in the 1st Fatal 4-Way of 2014, bringing the Gimmick Match count to 20 overall and 8 for WWE. Then we had the 1st 8-Man Tag Match since Superstars on February 6 between The Brotherhood & The Usos and Curtis Axel & Ryback & The New Age Outlaws. Then, we saw Darren Young’s 1st singles match of 2014, as he wrestled Damien Sandow, in his 1st match since Smackdown on January 31. Next, in a re-match from Main Event on February 5, The Miz wrestled Fandango. This was Miz’s 1st match on Smackdown since January 24. In his 4th straight main event, Randy Orton continued his Gauntlet against his Elimination Chamber Challengers, as he wrestled the man now known as Cesaro. He dropped Antonio from his name, so that’s what he will be known as here. This was Cesaro’s 1st main event since Smackdown on January 17. This was the 1st Smackdown since January 31 to not have a Diva’s Match.
