TONS OF NOTES AND NEWS FROM THIS WEEKEND'S LEGENDS OF THE RING CONVENTION IN NEW JERSEY

By Mike Johnson on 2008-10-13 10:44:54

The seventh Legends of the Ring convention promoted by Terrance Breeman and Three Count Promotions in Monroe, NJ was once again an overwhelming positive success in terms of attendance as 500-600 fans attended, including over 100 fans paying $225 for a VIP ticket that included photos and autographs with the main talent brought in by the convention itself, comprised of Jake Roberts, Scott Hall, Raven, Gene Okerlund, Howard Finkel, Glacier, The Young Stallions, Rene Goulet, The Killer Bees, Wendi Richter, Kevin Sullivan, Don Muraco and Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissiee.  The convention also brought in Mr. Fuji for an additional price for fans who wanted photos with Muraco and Fuji.

Ric Flair made his Northeastern convention appearance as well for fans who paid $80 to get a photo and an item signed by Flair.  Flair was sequestered in a separate room.

Notes from the convention:

*The biggest draws outside of the "official convention" guests were Greg Price bringing in a combination of Tully Blanchard and JJ Dillon as well as an ECW-themed table for the first-ever Blue World Order convention appearance and a combination Shane Douglas-Francine appearance.  The lines for both tables were beyond huge most of the day.  The BWO response was something to see as a lot of old fans came out wearing their shirts.

*There were a lot of problems dealing with Scott Hall at the convention.  Beyond the already well-recounted Iron Sheik Roast incident, there was a problem with Hall allegedly trying to pick up a woman who was in the hotel's restaurant while she was with her husband and children several times.  Police were called but the family declined to press charges.  Hall also missed his flight back to Florida and was said to have demanded the convention cover another hotel night and the cost of a flight change.  I'd be really surprised to see the convention bring him back in again.

*Former ECW champion Justin Credible has graduated culinary school and is working at an Olive Garden branch currently.  He and Jason Knight are re-launching CT independent promotion Assault Championship Wrestling next weekend and are also training talents in the Nutmeg State.

*Konnan canceled his scheduled booking the week of the convention, so Legends of the Ring brought in Rene Goulet at the last minute as a replacement.  Since Konnan had been sent a plane ticket and half of his money up front, the hope was LOTR would bring him in for their next event.

*Francine is now booking the Pennsylvania-based Women's Extreme Wrestling promotion, which regularly runs the former ECW Arena.

*Shane Douglas told those who asked that he was back teaching in the Pittsburgh area.

*Former WWE Diva Ashley Massaro completely no-showed a scheduled booking at the convention without calling ahead to the promoter that was bringing her in.

*Sean Waltman missed his appearance as he screwed up on his flight time from Mexico (where he currently resides).  Waltman immediately issued a statement via the promoter bringing him in apologizing and saying he realizes his reputation and promised to make it up to fans.

*Dawn Marie, who lives in the area, missed the convention with the word making the rounds that she had taken ill.

*In one of the stranger incidents of the day, former WWE Diva Terri Runnels was loudly going off on NWS promoter Gino Moore, although I have no idea why.  The story making the rounds was Moore had allegedly insinuated he had slept with her but that story is so preposterous I don't know that anyone would believe it to begin with.

*There were some fan complaints about Raven being rude, but I think some of that was Raven trying to stay in some sort of character.

*Additional names brought into the convention by vendors included Cherry, King Kong Bundy, Giant Silva, The Iron Sheik, Scotty Riggs, Bob Backlund, Superstar Graham, Missy Hyatt, Tammy Sytch, Runnels, Marty Jannetty, Carl-Pierre Oullette, Disco Inferno, Marcus Bagwell, Jimmy Snuka, The Powers of Pain, Big Daddy V and even Diana Hart-Smith.

*A lot of independent talent was floating around as well, including Kevin Matthews, Danny Demanto, Sean Hanson, Melissa Coates, Rhett Titus, The ECW Zombie and more.
