D Block:  Will Ospreay vs. Juice Robinson

Ospreay attacks Juice on this way to the ring. Juice did not bring the U.S. Title to the ring.  Wild match.  Juice hits a neck breaker on the guardrail.  Ospreay with a Powerbomb on the ring apron.  Ospreay goes for a 450 splash and takes a double knee to the gut.  Juice hits a Juice Box.  Two count.  Juice hits a low blow and goes under the ring.  He pulls out the U.S. Title belt and goes to hit Ospreay.  Ospreay with a hook kick to Juice's face.  Ospreay goes for a Hidden Blade but Juice smashes him in the face with the belt.  Ospreay kicks out at two.  Juice takes out Ospreay to the floor and hits a Piledriver.   Juice drags Ospreay in the ring and hits Pulp Friction.   Juice goes for the pin but Ospreay kicks out at two.  Juice hits the Left Hand of God.  Ospreay with a hook kick.  Ospreay goes for an Oscutter but Juice catches him and tries for a Rock Slide.  Ospreay slides out and hits a Hidden Blade to the jaw.

Ospreay pin Juice.

Will Ospreay takes the lead in D Block with 8 points and a 4-2 record.   Juice finishes with 4 points and a 2-4 record.

Will Ospreay takes back his U.S. Heavyweight Title.

After the Piledriver on the floor and Pulp Friction, Juice should have won the match.  Those two big moves should have ended the match.  However, Juice pinned Ospreay at Capital Collision in a 4 way match.  So this is Ospreay getting his win back in Japan.  On the positive side, this results clears the chaos in the D Block.

D Block:  Shingo Takagi vs. El Phantasmo

They fight to the floor and ELP hits a top rope Asai moonsault.   ELP was on offense early in the match.  Takagi was the defense.   ELP kicks Takagi in the head and hits a UFO.  ELP dazzles with aerial moves and goes for a tope suicida.   Takagi punches him in the face as he comes through the ropes.  Ouch.  Takagi hits a DVD on the floor.  Takagi with a cover but only a two count.  ELP and Takagi exchange strikes.  Takagi with a DDT and a Hot Shot.  The battle on the top rope and ELP hits a Super Rana off the top rope.  ELP follows with Thunderkiss 86.  Takagi blocks a CR2 and hits a lariat.  Takagi hit a Noshigami and a Pumping Bomber.  Two count.  Takagi picks up ELP for his finisher, but ELP turns it into a crucifix for a two count.   ELP comes off the ropes and Takagi hits a pop up DVD.  ELP counters out of Last of the Dragon and hits a CR2.  Takagi kicks out.  ELP hits Sudden Death twice then follows with a cross arm Piledriver (which ELP later calls "The CR3".

ELP pins Takagi.

Both El Phantasmo and Shingo Takagi finish at 3-3 with 6 points each.  ELP's win also cements Will Ospreay as the winner of D Block.

Good match.  El Phantasmo has shown that he is an asset to New Japan.   He has competed in the New Japan Cup, Best of Super Juniors and the G1 Climax already in 2022.    He has proven his ability to compete in the Heavyweight division and he has the potential to be a top heel in this company on the level of Jay White.

C Block:  Hirooki Goto vs. EVIL, with Dick Togo

EVIL attacks Goto on his way to the ring.  Typical House of Torture match where Goto has to fight both EVIL and Dick Togo.  The battled on the floor and they throw each other into guardrails.  Togo grabbed Goto's leg to keep him on the floor while the referee was counting.  Goto kicks Togo in the head and gets back in before the count out.   EVIL hits Darkness Falls.  Two count.  Goto fights back with a Shoto off the turnbuckles.  Goto hits an ushigaroshi and goes for a GTR.  EVIL rakes him in the eyes and he and Togo go for a Magic Killer.  Goto reverses out and EVIL takes a Magic Killer. Goto hits a GTW.  Two count.  EVIL gets Goto into a Dragon Sleeper position.  Togo comes in the ring and kicks Goto in the crotch.  EVIL hits Everything is Evil.

EVIL pins Goto.

Both EVIL and Hirooki Goto finish at 3-3 with 6 points each and are eliminated.   C Block Winner will be determined by the next match.

C Block:  Tetsuya Naito vs. Zack Sabre Jr.

Naito starts messing with ZSJ by throwing his shirt in his face.   ZSJ attacks Naito with uppercuts.  They move quickly going covers and near falls.   Naito goes for a Destino but he twists his body and traps ZSJ in a cradle.

Naito pins ZSJ.  In under 3 minutes.  Shocker.

Both Zack Sabre Jr. and Tetsuya Naito finish at 4-2 with 8 points.  However, since they are tied and Naito beat Zack, Naito wins the C Block.

Zack threw a tantrum after the match and destroyed tables at ringside and beating up young lions.   Naito kept teasing Zack by throwing ice packs at him.

Tomorrow, The D Block winner Will Ospreay will face C Block winner Tetsuya Naito in the Semi Finals of the G1.   This will be their first time singles match, according to Chris Charlton.

B Block:  Tomohiro Ishii vs. SANADA

Ishii pins SANADA after a brainbuster.

Tomohiro Ishii finishes at 2-4 with 4 points.  SANADA finishes at 3-3 and 6 points.  Both men are eliminated from the B Block.

Solid match despite having no bearing on the G1 Semifinals

B Block:  Tama Tonga, with Jado vs. Jay White, with Gedo

Tama started the match quickly from adrenaline, but White got control, but slowing the pace.  White grabbed headlocks, which tired Tama.  Then White would hit a Saito suplex dropping Tama on his head.   Tama hulked up and they exchanged chops and strikes.   White with a Complete Shot and a dead lift German suplex.  Tama hits a Villano.  Tama picks up White for an SRC and follows with a Supreme Flow.  Two count.  White avoids a Gun Stun and plants Tama with a uranage.   White hits a Sleeper suplex.  Tama reverses out of the Bladerunner and hits a Tongan Twist.  They counter each other's finishers and Tama connects with a Bloody Sunday.  White kicks out at two.  Tama goes for the DSD.  White backdrops him.  White goes for a Bladerunner.  Tama with an inside cradle.   Two count. Tama misses a Gun Stun and White hits another Sleeper Suplex.  Tama escapes another Bladerunner and hits a Gun Stun.

Tama pins White.

Tama Tonga and Jay White both finish at 5-1 with 10 points each.  With Tama holding the tie breaker win over Switchblade, Tama Tonga wins the B Block.

Good match.  This was a victory that Tama Tonga needed to have, not just to win the G1, but after getting embarrassed by Bullet Club, he gets some revenge against Jay White who caused it all.  Even if Tama does not win the G1, I can see him getting a title shot in the coming months leading to Wrestle Kingdom.  His win over Jay White may earn him a shot.

A Block:  JONAH vs. Bad Luck Fale

This was a slug fest, with both men punching each other in and out of the ring.  Both men smacked the ring post.  Both are almost counted out.   Fale hit a spear.  JONAH tried a Black Forest Bomb but could not lift Fale.  JONAH drops Fale with a lariat.  JONAH bodyslams Fale.  JONAH hits a Torpedo.

JONAH pins Fale.

JONAH finishes at 4-2 and 8 points.  Bad Luck Fale finishes 2-4 with 4 points.

JONAH is in a good position.  He was never pinned by anyone in the G1.  He lost by count out against Archer and Yano, but was never truly beaten.  He looked like a monster as he pinned Okada, Lawlor, Cobb and Fale.  I hope he will get a chance in New Japan against their top stars and top titles.

A Block:  Kazuchika Okada vs. Lance Archer

Archer was focused and was not playing any games.  Archer hits Okada with a chokeslam to start the match.  He follows with a Black Hole Slam.  Archer levels Okada with a Pounce.  Archer takes Okada to the floor and slams his head into the guardrail.   Archer with a Cannonball on Okada against the guardrail.  Brutal.  Archer picks up a young lion and slams him onto Okada.   Archer tries to chokeslam Okada again, but Okada jumps on the ring apron.  Archer trips up Okada who hits the apron face first.  Archer did an Undertaker rope walk and hit a moonsault on Okada.  Okada kicks out.  Archer picks up Okada for a Black Out but Okada slips out and throws a lariat.  Both men are down. Archer goes for another chokeslam and Okada hits two dropkicks.  Okada slams Archer.  He drops an elbow from the top rope.  Okada goes for  Rainmaker but Archer reverses out and hits a dropkick of his own.  Archer drops Okada with his own Rainmaker. Okada kicks out at two.  Archer picks up Okada and hits a Black Out.  Archer lies on him for the count.  Okada rolls him into a crucifix.  Two count.  Archer looks frustrated.  Archers throws a running elbow into Okada's neck.  Archer goes for another Black Out but Okada wiggles out.  He chop blocks Archer's knee and applies the Money Clip.  Archer seemed to be fading but hhe powered out.  He drops Okada with a lariat.  Archer charges from the corner but Okada hits him in the face with a dropkick.  Okada powers him up into a Landslide.   Okada hits a Rainmaker.

Okada pins Archer.

Kazuchika Okada finishes at 5-1 and 10 points.   Lance Archer finishes at 3-3 with 6 points. Kazuchika Okada wins the A Block.

The A Block Winner, Kazuchika Okada will face The B Block Winner, Tama Tonga in their Semi Final match tomorrow.

Good match. Okada was a bump machine in this match and Archer gave him a beating.  Archer got a massive pop when he was announced that he would be in the G1.  Archer was slow to start but he gained steam and he was a beast when he faced Okada. Archer looked strong going into the match.  Okada looked strong in overcoming the monster.

Side Note:  Lance Archer has not been a major player in AEW in recent months.  He should be.  New Japan has just shown how to book big men to look like monsters, but still get everyone over.  AEW should be able to do it too.

Tomorrow, the G1 Climax Semi Finals will happen with the top matches:

1.  Tetsuya Naito vs. Will Ospreay

2.  Kazuchika Okada vs. Tama Tonga

I would also expect storyline angles on the bottom half of the card to set up title matches for New Japan events heading into September.
