Gunn wrote, "5 months ago, while quarantining, I was almost done editing #TheSuicideSquad & had just turned in a draft of #GuardiansoftheGalaxyVol3 & was awaiting notes. Normally I would try & take a break during this time & go on vacation. But with Covid that wasn’t happening. So, having nothing else to do, I started writing a TV series, #Peacemaker, mostly for fun, as I didn’t believe it was ever going to happen. I wrote a whole first season in 8 weeks. And now, here I am in my trailer, on the first day of shooting. Life is surreal. Let’s go (& go safely!)"

In September 2020, HBO Max ordered an eight-episode first season for the character starring Cena with James Gunn, the writer and director of Squad and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy returning to write and direct the series.  The series will explore Peacemaker's background before the Suicide Squad film.  In promotional material for the film, Cena has described this take on Peacemaker as a "douchey Captain America."

Cena's portrayal of Peacemaker will be the first ever live action incarnation of the character, a soldier and super-hero who loves peace so much he is willing to kill for it.  The character was originally created by Charlton Comics but acquired by DC in the mid-80s.

The Suicide Squad film is slated for a August 6, 2021 release and is the second Squad film, based on the DC Comics series with the premise of the United States government forcing incarcerated super-villains to go on suicide missions under threat of death.   There is no word yet on when the Peacemaker series will debut.

Cena last appeared for WWE, as a competitor, at Wrestlemania 36, facing Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Funhouse Match, a bout where Cena literally disappeared from WWE storylines.  He popped up over the weekend as part of WWE's announcement of three future Wrestlemania events through 2023.

HBO issued the following press release in September 2020 to officially announce the series:

James Gunn said: “Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. John Cena said: “I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

“James Gunn has the unique ability to create an expansive universe while also bringing to life the soul and wit of each character. We look forward to a deep dive into the world of Peacemaker,” said Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer for HBO and HBO Max.

Cena is also the #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Elbow Grease picture books, inspired by the lessons he learned about hard work, perseverance, and team work from growing up with four brothers. Elbow Grease: Fast Friends, the third book in the series, will be released in September 2020. He has been the face of the WWE for more than a decade, building a globally recognized brand. After Peacemaker, he will next go into production on the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, which he is once again writing and directing.
