MAJOR TITLE CHANGE AND MORE: COMPLETE WWE BACKLASH COVERAGE

By Mike Johnson on 2017-05-21 19:00:00

Baron Corbin vs. Sami Zayn.

Corbin used his size and strength to control Zayn early on.    Zayn used his speed, including a dropkick to try and throw him off.  Zayn was selling that his lower back was hurt early.  Zayn went to the floor but was whipped into the barricade, which he hit a moonsault off of on Corbin.  He tossed Corbin back into the ring  but was slow returning due to the back.  Corbin manhandled him and slammed him into the buckles hard, then began stomping and kicking away at his lower back.

Corbin whipped Zayn into the buckles hard again.   Corbin cinched in a bearhug to continue wearing down Zayn's back.     Zayn fired back and went to the top but before he could do anything, Corbin cut him off with a big spinebuster.    Corbin continued beating Zayn, yelling at him to stay down.   Zayn came back with a lariat, then hit a flying bodypress off the middle rope for a two count.  Zayn tried to send a charging Corbin into the buckles but Corbin slid out to the floor, rebounded and came back with a huge clothesline that sent Zayn upside down for a two count.  Nice spot there.

Corbin continued to work over the back and chokeslammed Zayn down for another two count.  Zayn made a comeback and they went back and forth.  Zayn got a two count with a crucifix but Corbin nailed him with a Deep Six for another two count.  The story was that Zayn took a licking and kept on ticking.  Yes, I know that's a cliche but hey, we just saw a match with a guy crossdressing as a grandma, so give me a little leeway here.

Zayn finally nailed the Helluva Kick and scored the pin, which they treated like it was a big upset because Corbin made a mistake.

Your winner, Sami Zayn!

Decent back and forth match.

They aired a promotional video where Xavier Woods played the Rocket League game that is now sponsoring WWE.  They announced Woods would be at the League's world championship the weekend of 6/2.

A limo pulled in backstage.  It was for Jinder Mahal.  He said Chicago and America is full of haters, who hate him for who they think he is.  They hate him because of the way he looks and talks.  He said he was going to take all of that hatred and turn it into goodness and into something positive.  He said he would turn it into something spiritual and almost holy.  He said he was truly a peaceful man but when provoked he turns into an animal.  He said he was going to show the world what India already knows - that he's the modern day Maharajah.   He promised to be WWE champion.

They really need a strong second half because at this point, Takeover is blowing this not out of the water, but out of the galaxy.

Natalya & Carmella & Tamina vs. Charlotte & WWE Smackdown Women's champion Naomi & Becky Lynch.

Tamina started off with Becky (who was wearing her hair sort of like Bull Nakano, which I popped for) and nailed a headbutt.  Natalya tagged in but Becky suplexed her and tagged Charlotte in.  Charlotte controlled her but was stomped.  Charlotte was whipped into the corner but did the Flair flop and landed on her feet.  Carmella distracted her with Ellsworth, allowing Natalya to nail a lariat.  Charlotte was pulled over into Carmella's corner and they worked her over.

Carmella rained down with elbows and mocked Charlotte's "Woo."  She ran Charlotte into the buckles but Charlotte finally reversed it and drilled Carmella in.  Naomi tagged in and nailed all these kicks but it was obvious Carmella was really blocking them as she was selling.   Naomi wiped out everyone with other kicks but Carmella drilled her from behind and stomped her.

Carmella yelled at Naomi and did a moonwalk before hitting a bronco buster.   Tamina tagged in and cinched in a side chinlock.    She nailed a nice clothesline on Naomi for a two count.  Tamina continued working over Naomi, nailing a Samoan Drop for a two count.   Becky finally tagged in and nailed an exploder on Natalya.  She nailed a nice leaping clothesline for a two count.  Lots of fire in Becky's offense.  Lots of fire in Becky.

They went into everyone hitting big moves.  Natalya went for the sharpshooter but Becky turned it into the Disarmher.  Carmella attacked her but Flair drilled her  Tamina superkicked Charlotte.  It ended with Natalya turning Becky over into the Sharpshooter again and scoring the submission.

Your winners, Carmella & Natalya & Tamina!

It was OK, nothing amazing and a few moments that made time stand still but overall, not bad.

WWE United States champion Kevin Owens vs. AJ Styles.

Before this even starts, unless something terrible happens, I am calling this will be the best match of the show.

Lots of chants for Styles early.  They went back and forth testing each other out.  Owens began enforcing his will with a big clothesline and scored a two count.  Owens cinched in a side chinlock, trying to wear down the challenger.  Owens wiped out Styles with a trifecta of back senton splashes for a two count.  Styles made a comeback and scored several two counts.

Styles caught Owens and drove him into the mat face-first.  Styles nailed a DVDR across his knee for another two count.  Styles was setting up for the moonsault into the DDT but Owens cut Styles with a superkick and nailed a neckbreaker for a two count.    Owens kicked Styles in the face but AJ fired back.  Styles was sent over the top to the apron and wiped out, sent to the floor.

Styles fought back and even tried to go for the Styles Clash on the apron but Owens nailed him, knocking him to the floor.  He sent Styles into the ring steps and brought him back into the ring, hitting a cannonball.  Styles' right leg was hurt so Owens tied it up in the ropes and nailed another cannonball into it, then cinched in a one legged crab.  Owens turned that into an anklelock.    Styles fought to the ropes to break it up.

Owens pulled Styles to the top for a move but Styles slipped out and turned the attempt into a sunset flip powerbomb but was too spent to make the cover.  He pulled himself up on the apron and set up for the Phenomenal Forearm.  He went for it but his leg gave out and he crashed and burned.  Owens nailed a double arm DDT but Styles kicked out.

Owens was jawjacking and went to grab Styles, but was hit out of nowhere with a Pele Kick.  Styles placed Owens on the top and went for a superplex but Owens fought it off and nailed a fisherman's buster style suplex for a two count.  The crowd rallied Styles, chanting his name.  Owens went to the top but Styles rolled outside to the apron.  Owens grabbed him and set up for a suplex on the outside but Styles hooked his leg under the bottom rope and Styles reversed it, drilling him with a suplex that was aimed for Owens to hit the point of the corner of the apron.

Styles rolled back into the ring to break the countout, then returned to the floor to get Owens, who shoved him into the timekeeper's area.    Styles came back with the Phenomenal Forearm off the barricade.  They battled onto the announcers' table.  Styles tried for a Styles Clash but Owens nailed him.  Styles fell , crotching himself and his leg got stuck in one of the holes set for the monitor.  Styles fell and was hanging upside down as Owens returned to the ring watching Styles being counted out.

Your winner and still WWE United States champion, Kevin Owens!

Owens attacked Styles immediately after the bell.  Styles had to be walked out by the officials.

This was easily the best thing on the show.  The finish wasn't the best but sets up rematches and I thought it was different.   The work bell to bell was very good.

Live, the crowd didn't like the finish as you could hear some "Bullsh**" chants.

They announced Zayn. Owens and Dillinger would be on Talking Smack after the PPV.
