GOLDBERG VS. LESNAR SET?

By Mike Johnson on 2016-10-05 10:04:00

Former WWE and WCW World champion Bill Goldberg is set to appear on ESPN Sportscenter tonight with Jonathan Coachman to promote the release of next week's WWE 2K17 videogame and possibly announce his return to WWE for the first time since departing at Wrestlemania 20 in March 2004.

As previously noted on PWInsider.com, the two sides have been in discussions since at least August.  While Goldberg was in New York City for WWE 2K17 promotional material, the two sides had discussions that amplified after WWE officials saw how loud chants for "Goldberg" were all three nights in New York City after the trailer for the game played in the Barclays Center.

Goldberg, in speaking to PWInsider.com that weekend, noted that if WWE wanted to come to the table with an offer, he would consider it, but a deal wasn't something he was pursuing.  He admitted he was surprised that WWE even signed off on him appearing in the 2K videogame as a pitch by videogame producers to include Goldberg had been shot down by WWE years prior.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross noted on his Twitter account last night that one source was claiming Goldberg vs. Lesnar was a done deal and that the match would take place next month at the Survivor Series in Toronto:

It should be pointed out that WWE has booked the Alamodome for the 2017 Royal Rumble and certainly the dream match of Lesnar vs. Goldberg in a dome would be a hell of a spectacle as well as give WWE more time to promote and push tickets and interest.

Goldberg, meanwhile, has stoked the fires of speculation, tweeting the following:

Goldberg last worked for WWE at the aforementioned Wrestlemania 20 in March 2004, defeating Brock Lesnar.  At the time, each were leaving WWE and the crowd at Madison Square Garden turned on them both, instead cheering for special referee Steve Austin.   Goldberg, a massive star in WCW, has been open about his unhappiness in how he was presented during his one year WWE run from 2003-2004 over the years.   Should a deal be struck, it should be interesting to see how he is portrayed and how much he is used by the company.

We should know more tonight after Sportscenter airs on ESPN.
