Masato Tanaka, the late Mike Awesome's greatest rival, told ZERO-ONE's website that when he first learned of Awesome's passing, he hoped the news was false. Tanaka noted that Awesome was his greatest foe inside the ring but also one of his greatest friends. Tanaka noted his feud with Awesome in ECW was the turning point of his career and that Awesome's passing does not change the importance of Awesome's friendship to him.
Tanaka and Awesome feuded for several years in both Japan's Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling and the original Extreme Championship Wrestling, trading the ECW World championship. Awesome defeated Tanaka in his final professional wrestling match at the first ECW One Night Stand in June 2005.
The wake for Mike "Awesome" Alfonso will take place on this evening from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home, 6919 Providence Road, in Riverview, Florida 33569. Funeral services will take place on tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
